Football fans armed with Twitter accounts but no inside information have wrongly declared Roma winger Mohamed Salah as a Liverpool signing about 30 times since the end of the season. It now appears that his move to Anfield might be on hold as Juventus and AC Milan have joined the race for his signature. The ex-Chelsea man has fired 15 goals and contributed 11 assists in just 29 appearances this season following his £12m move to Italy in 2016.
The pacey wide-man has been likened to Sadio Mane and therefore looks a perfect fit for Liverpool but his previous spell in the Premier League was short-lived. Having played just 13 times for the Blues he was quick to make a move to Italy, initially on loan to Fiorentina before hopping over to Roma and eventually signing a permanent deal.
Where next?
It has been well documented that Salah has previously rejected Liverpool. The Merseyside club came knocking on the door before the Egyptian’s £11m move to Chelsea from Basel in 2013 but Salah chose Chelsea. The problem at Roma is that the club lacks ambition in the face of Juventus’s dominance of the Italian league. Several players have pointed to that “second-best is good enough” attitude this season when they have been asked why they wanted to move away from Rome.
Salah was one of the players to suggest a move could be on the cards if he could join a team capable of challenging for trophies. Liverpool has won one trophy in five years. Juventus, which is also interested in Salah, has won seven trophies in the same amount of time. There seems to be no comparison between the two clubs.
If I were Salah, I wouldn’t be considering Liverpool or even the Premier League as an option. Having failed once at Chelsea, a club with more quality than Liverpool, he should move to Turin if he receives an offer from Juventus. He would have more chances there of playing in cup finals and in the Champions League, given that the Serie A title pretty much lives in Juventus’s trophy cabinet.
It’s a no-brainer. However if Juve don’t pursue the winger this summer then he may be better off staying at Roma. At the age of 24 and having recovered from his failed attempts in the PL to become a highly-rated player in an improving league, Salah could find that moving to England is a backwards step.
What can we expect?
The transfer window hasn’t opened yet and Liverpool fans believe they have their first deal done, which is strongly rumoured to be Salah. Jurgen Klopp has also backed claims that his transfer shopping is already worked out, adding further weight to the speculation about the Roma winger. I believe the only way he will come to Anfield is if Liverpool stumps up a fee of around £45m and offers him silly money. Otherwise, I expect him to be playing for the second-best team in Italy again next season.
