Commute: The Legends of London Transport

You know them, they are those special ones (not Jose Mourihno) who make travelling around London tolerable. They are the Legends of London transport. As opposed to the Dicks!

Packed train Wizard

Image result for image packed tubeYou have probably witnessed this phenomenon. You are on a packed train at a platform. People have crammed on and others have turned away knowing there’s no space.

But one fellow, looking like an all-knowing grey-featured oracle of the city elite hops on the very edge of the train as the bleeps are sounding, bends ever so slightly and the doors close around a centimetre away from his back perfectly matching the profile. You thought this dick was going to trap the doors and hold everyone up.

This guy is one of the true Legends of London transport.

The Bus Driver who lets everyone on when the machines screwed.

Little acts of understanding and common sense. The Oyster reader is flashing and won’t do anything. We are keen to get on and get going. The driver understands this and lets you all on for free. It happens sometimes. Unfortunately, you have probably reached your daily cap by that point anyway. Nevertheless, this is a legend of London transport.

The Bus Driver Legend who lets you on when your Oyster is out

This doesn’t really deserve its own category from the above, but we’re getting desperate.

The People who actually know you can move down the carriage legends

It’s not difficult. Unfortunately it’s a single-file space so if someone blocks the end no one can make use of this supposedly mythical use of space.

The Help the Old, the Mom with a Child legends

These people were raised by their folks well, they know the way it works. Give up your seat if you’re able. Or how about helping out a bit?

The Helper of the Map Gazers legend

You see them all the time, people, mostly tourists, gazing at the tube map getting more and more confused. A little stressed. The legends spot this and ask whether they need a hand. Legends of London!
