British music has never been stronger. There is whole bunch of fabulous talent coming through that will play during festival season this year. Let’s count them down.
5. The Big Moon
The Big Moon are four very talented London girls who make fun, exciting and colourful rock music. I can guarantee they will have you dancing, jumping around and chanting their catchy choruses. They released their debut album “Love in the 4th dimension” in April and I have been playing it on repeat. Having supported The Maccabees and The Vaccines and having toured with Marika Hackman and played on her soon to be released debut album they are definitely a band to look out for. Have a listen to their song “Sucker” below
Catch them at Tramlines (July 21-23), Y Not (July 27-30), Green Man (August 17-20). Reading and Leeds (August 25-27).
4. Glass Animals
This Oxford band has been on the rise for the past couple of years. Their unique blend of indie synth pop mixed with hip hop influences has spread worldwide and I can understand why, as their songs have a weird pop sound combined with unique noises such as video game sounds as heard in their track Season 2 Episode 3 which you can hear below. There will be lots of chances to catch them live this summer as they will be performing at Glastonbury (June 21-25), Latitude (July 13-16), Longitude (July 14-16), Reading & Leeds (August 25-27), Electric Fields (September 1-2)
Make sure you don’t miss them!
3. Shame
If you’re looking for a show where the place will get turned upside down, south London post-punk five-piece Shame are exactly the type of band you want. Charismatic frontman Charlie Steen is no stranger to crowd surfing, sharing drinks with the crowd and throwing beer all over himself and his bandmates. You can see them perform at Latitude (July 13-16), Kendal Calling (July 27-30), Green Man (August 17-20), End of the Road (August 21 – September 3).
2. Declan McKenna
He’s only 18 and has already played all over the world. Declan McKenna reminds me a bit of McLovin from the comedy film Superbad but there is nothing funny about his music. He sings about current political and social issues and tries to give voice to the thoughts of his generation. McKenna’s indie rock music is definitely something to keep an eye on, as he played Glastonbury when he was just 16 and won the emerging talent competition. Be sure to go see him this summer as he is playing plenty of festivals including Glastonbury (June 21-25), TRSNMT (July 7-9), Latitude ( July 13-16), Reading & Leeds (August 25-27)
1. Alt-J
The Leeds trio are one of the UK’s biggest bands at the moment. They mix folk, electronic and guitar to create their unique sound. They are releasing their third studio album “Relaxer” on June 2 and I cannot wait to hear what it will sound like live. Your only chance to catch them in the UK this summer is at Glastonbury (June 21-25) however they are playing all over Europe so if you’re in the mood to travel around you will definitely be able to hear them live. Have a listen to my personal favourite Alt-J song “Taro” below
