He arrived in the Premier League with a glistening smile, a sharp sense of humour and a frightening appetite to win. Jose Mourinho was one of the most feared football managers in the game during his first spell in the PL with Chelsea following his miraculous run in the Champions League with FC Porto. Fast-forward a decade and the 54-year-old Portuguese manager seems to have lost the fear factor he once had.
Where did it all go wrong for Jose?
After the bar was set high during his first spell at Chelsea it was inevitable that there would be a downwards slope at some point, however nobody would have imagined Mourinho the way he is today. The ex-Porto man’s downfall began after a falling out with key players at Stamford Bridge. It was a typical backlash by players against an egotistical manager but Mourinho had other problems at Chelsea including a large decline in youth development at the Bridge. Mourinho’s desire to keep signing players at the top level left Roman Abramovich with a much lighter wallet and earned Chelsea the embarrassing reputation of “buying the league”. That is a label the club hasn’t managed to brush off even today.
Real Madrid came calling and it looked a perfect fit although Jose’s true colours were about to be exposed with no hiding place at the biggest club on earth. Altercations and run-ins with arch rivals Barcelona, including an eye-gouge to then Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, left Mourinho hated by the Catalans and even more so by the fans of Madrid. Why, you might ask? Real are a club that associates itself with dominance and class.
A club that tends to look down on other clubs but has always demanded respect, like a person who sits in first class on every train journey. That behavior from a big-name manager such as Jose Mourinho undermined the image the Galaticos were looking to set and it soon meant it was time to change managers.
Chelsea tried again with the ex-Inter Milan boss but the outcome was the same. Big name players turned against him and his second term was a flop except this time Jose’s dark side was exposed even more starkly than during his time at Real. Booed by fans in his closing games and leaving the club 15th on the table, Mourinho’s failure was even more obvious considering that Chelsea had won the league with a very similar squad the season before.
And now that he is at Manchester United? His poor treatment of German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, nasty attitude towards Luke Shaw and desperate attempts to blame officials after every poor game are paving the road to another disaster and possibly the end of a rollercoaster managerial career for Jose Mourinho.
