Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be well aware that we’ve officially fallen out of love with all things sugar, now that it has been linked to everything from our obesity crisis to low energy and bad skin. Luckily, “sugar free” doesn’t have to mean “fun free” as more London restaurants than ever are offering plenty of sugar-free choices on the menu. Read on to see how you can have your (sugar free) cake and eat it too!
Bring on the Cake
For those new to sugar free Romeo’s Sugar Free Bakery, Islington should be your first port of call. This trendy Islington eatery is known for its impressive range of completely sugar free cakes. It was one of the first dedicated sugar free eateries in the capital and has since branched out to offer everything from plant-based brunches to homemade gluten free bread. Just make sure you’ve got time on your hands as it’s not unusual to see people queuing out the doors on a Saturday morning.
If you’re looking to order cakes for an event, a dinner party (or, let’s face it, for when you just don’t fancy leaving the house) then Nom Nom, a bakery that sells goodies free of gluten, dairy, yeast, egg AND sugar, offers a range of delicious cakes that can be delivered straight to your door.
They even supply donuts and cupcakes by the box, sweetening them with natural fruit concentrates.
A Spot of Afternoon Tea
Several top eateries in London are now offering the chance to partake in the very British tradition of afternoon tea without the usual guilt of overindulging. Based at the Intercontinental Hotel in Park Lane, The Wellington recently launched a “guiltless afternoon tea” for those who are avoiding refined sugars. The menu promises treats such as flourless chocolate cake and wholemeal scones, using completely unrefined natural sugars such as agave and apple blossom syrup.
At £42 a head it’s not cheap but it’s worth it for those who want to indulge while still eating clean. Another favourite is Brown’s Hotel Tea Tox, designed by clean eating guru Madeline Shaw, which includes seasonal fruit, pistachio brownies and miso-glazed salmon. It doesn’t look like your average afternoon tea but uses natural, high quality ingredients which are full of flavour.
Cool Down with Ice Cream
Dairy-free ice cream is no longer a rarity in London and there are now plenty of ways to cool off with a sugar free iced treat too! Gelateria Danieli claims it has an ice cream for everyone including sugar free treats based on yoghurt. Notting Hill’s Snowflake Gelato has more than 50 flavours and its guilt-free range includes treats with no gluten, dairy products nor added sugar.
