Fitness: Best Hula Hooping Classes in London

Think that hula hooping is just for kids? Well, think again! Recent studies show that hula hooping can burn calories and improve your strength, traits that have helped it to become an adult exercise device as well as a playground toy.

hulaWhile hula hooping works well for anyone who prefers to exercise in private, it’s also nice to get out and socialise once in a while. That’s why a number of hula hoop fanatics have started classes in London and other cities around the world.

These classes aim to teach you different hula hoop techniques so that you’re not stuck doing the same routine over and over again.

HulaFit

HulaFit has been named London’s most fun fitness class, and rightly so. HulaFit is ideal for beginners since it combines exercise with catchy dance music, so you’ll be more motivated to get your sweat on. HulaFit is held at various locations across London, such as Vauxhall on Mondays and Westbourne Grove on Tuesdays. Tickets cost about £6-7.

Hulagan Hoop

Hulagan Hoop is run by circus performer Anna the Hulagan, who is one of the top hula hoop instructors in London. She started her classes back in 2011 and has inspired other people to teach hula hoop. In Anna’s classes you’ll learn all kinds of tricks that will tone your stomach and make you sweat. Kings Cross, Hackney and Paddington are just a few of the places where you can find Hulagan Hoop classes. Make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Powerhoop

Powerhoop is another hugely successful class in London. Attendees are given weighted hoops to make their workout more effective. Powerhoops are considered to be better than normal hoops because they are much heavier and “challenge the core muscles, causing them to become firmer, stronger and more protective”. You may get some bruises at first but you’ll gradually get used to the heavy hoops.

Rooftop Hula Hooping

If you’re not afraid of heights I’m sure you’ll enjoy the hula hooping classes at The Berkeley. They are held on the rooftop of the hotel, so you can watch London’s spectacular skyline while working out. Anna Byrne, the founder of HulaFit, launched the classes in 2015 and they have been held every week since. You’ll burn more than 500 calories in an hour and learn some cool new moves, such as “The Limbo” and “Booty Bump”. You can finish off the class with a dip in the pool.
