Football: Who Are The Next £200m Players?

The money being thrown around for players has reached an all-time high with Neymar moving from Barcelona to PSG for a record £200m. The days are gone when you could buy Roy Keane for £7m or Thierry Henry for less than £15m.

The game may have gone mad but there is still a huge crop of undiscovered talent that may well be worth £200m in the next couple of years, in the same way that Ousmane Dembele has seen his value rise by more than £90m in one year.

Philippe Coutinho

Coutinho is probably the obvious place to start. Liverpool rejected a number of bids from Barcelona for the Brazilian midfielder with the highest thought to be around £138m.

If he can produce another season at the same level as the last, the Reds are unlikely to accept less than £200m in the future for their talisman. As Pele has recently said, Coutinho is a future Ballon D’Or winner and his value will certainly not be going down.

Emre Mor

The Turkish youngster was at Borussia Dortmund but because of injuries he had played just 12 times when he left the German side.

The 5’ 6” man has often been compared to Lionel Messi but he has been unable to really kick-start his career. The pressure may have been tough for him to handle but a move to Celta Vigo will be exactly what he needs as he is expected to play more and in Spain he won’t face the rough treatment that goes on in Germany.

The 20-year-old has shown enough signs of Messi-like brilliance to suggest it’s only a matter of time before he shows his true colours.

Gabriel Jesus

The Manchester City striker arrived in the Premier League with many assuming he wouldn’t be able to hack the aggression in England but he has gelled so well with his teammates that he is now keeping Sergio Aguero out of the team.

The 20-year-old has played 13 times in the Premier League, scoring eight goals and assisting four times. He seems more at home in England than most Brazilian imports and it looks like there’s a lot more to come from the £27m youngster. He has been Brazil’s star man in recent games alongside the likes of Neymar and Coutinho.

Marco Asensio

It’s hard to think of any youngster in the last 20 years who has started a career at Real Madrid with the same impact as Asensio.

With Gareth Bale struggling with injuries and Cristiano Ronaldo out of the side Madrid fans have been unsure who would takeover. The unlikely hero has been Asensio.

The 21-year-old was turned down by Barcelona two years ago when his price tag was just £5m and now he is taking the football world by storm, scoring stunning goals in almost every appearance. He looks like he is relishing the challenge of being a headline act at the Santiago Bernabeu and the ex-Mallorca man looks set to become the next Galacticos legend.

Youri Tielemans

It has been a long time since Belgium has produced a star as naturally talented as Tielemans at dominating a midfield.

With 139 appearances under his belt he has had an unrivalled amount of game time for a 20-year-old. The 5’ 9” man is deadly on both feet, has an immense passing range and only tends to score screamers.

He signed for Monaco for £21.6m during the summer transfer window but I expect him to move to one of the elite clubs within the next couple of years.
