Start-Ups: 5 Apps to Upgrade Your Security in London

London can be a dangerous city and sometimes upgrading your security is a comforting thing.. Homes get burgled, people are attacked and occasionally you can find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. Here are the five personal security apps we think are essential in London as getting out of those situations can be difficult but some start-ups are trying to help by providing information and support at your fingertips.

Companion

This is the perfect app for keeping your loved ones updated about your whereabouts. Companion is not only a way to share your location and status with friends and family but also a community of Companions who you can reach out to if you’re feeling nervous. If you’re worried about a friend or family member, you can “virtually” walk them home with Companion.

There is even a feature that allows you to alert the local police with just one finger tap, which can be quite useful in a sticky situation.

SafeSnapp

As you can imagine, that may not get you out of trouble but any good snap and an accurate location will help your friends and the police to find you. If things go badly it may end up helping the police to conduct their investigation.

Presence

Presence can turn your old iPhones, iPads or iPods into motion detector cameras which will alert you by text if anything moves in your home while you are away. You can view the live stream, get push notifications and set specific rules on the app.

It can be a good way to secure your home in a discreet way and the overall idea is that if you see something worrying you can call the police straight away, without needing to be on the spot. Presence works with wifi and it’s free. You can also get some pretty funny videos if you have a dog!  This app could be your first step towards setting up a smart home.

Bugle

It was created primarily for cyclists, runners and hikers who don’t want to carry their phone while exercising but want to let people if something goes wrong.

You tell Bugle how long you’re going to away and where you are going. If you don’t check in by the time you predicted the app will send an automatic email and text to your emergency contacts. You can also use it when going on a blind date, walking the dog late at night or if you’re worried about meeting someone new. It is not paranoid to take precautions!

Drunk Mode

Like the Companion app, Drunk Mode allows you to create a group of friends who can track each other by GPS when they are drunk. Use the function “Find My Drunk” and it will locate your missing friend.

The app even lets you find out where you went during the night, in case you don’t remember the next morning. Just make sure your phone is charged!
