Football: Which Team Will Buy Ivan Perisic

Ivan Perisic is one of those players who feels like he’s been around forever. Despite his ageing look he is still only 28 but he has been a Croatia first team player for the last six years.

Style of play

perisicThe Inter Milan wide man impressed in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg before moving to Italy and has continued his good work with 18 goals and 21 assists in 70 games. Perisic’s steady rise to the forefront of many transfer wishlists can be tracked through the gradual rise in his transfer fees. He joined BVB for £5m, then moved to Wolfsburg for £8m before joining Inter for £16m. Let’s take a look at why he is now being touted at about £40m.

The Croatian midfielder can play anywhere along the midfield and in any of the front three positions meaning his versatility is vital to his game. He’s another modern-day winger with the ability to score with either foot and in the last couple of seasons has scored several screamers that could compete for goal of the season.

The ex-Club Brugge man has averaged a goal every three games throughout his career at club and international level and across various leagues.

His statistical brilliance is outshone by his athleticism. Before becoming a footballer he was a marathon runner and a cross-country athlete at junior level and he has brought that speed and endurance into his footballing attitude. Known for his tireless end-to-end runs with and without the ball, the Croatian is just as deadly in the final minutes of a game as in the opening stages.

During the 2016 Euros he began to catch the eye of many of Europe’s big clubs including Juventus, which was set to sign him until Juan Cuadrado came available. Jurgen Klopp has been one of his big admirers in recent times because of his intelligent pressing.

The German manager has noticed Perisic’s smart body positioning when the opposition has the ball as he attempts to close down spaces rather than players, forcing errors from players on the other team. His most dangerous asset could be his ability to find a half-yard of space and punish the defender. Although he may not be the electric winger most clubs are after these days, he can shift the ball to his right or left side and his deadly decision-making is what makes him a £40m player.

Perisic is direct, fit and incredibly underrated for the talent he possesses, probably due to the fact he’s not as flashy as many modern-day wingers.

Who is going to sign him?

Manchester United has already had a bid rejected but Arsenal’s pursuit of Thomas Lemar has slowed down, so Jose Mourinho could face competition from Arsene Wenger. Either way I don’t expect him to stay in Italy as he has turned down a £4m annual contract from Inter Milan.

Fun Fact

Perisic made his professional volleyball debut this summer but lost to Brazilian opponents who took part in the Olympics.
