Getaway: Ideas for a Cheap Weekend out of London

You’re sick of the constant grind of the city and desperate for a weekend of fresh air and some jollity but can you afford a trip away from London? Here is a guide to some cheap out-of-town fun and relaxation if you have a spare £150.

Beside the seaside

weekendLondoners looking for a handy seaside break will struggle to find a better town than Brighton.  It’s about an hour and a half away and train tickets average from £10 to £20 depending on when you book them. Brighton has a vast variety of hotels, hostels and B&B’s, from the luxurious to the cheap and cheerful. It’s such an easy and rewarding weekend break.

“No. 27 Brighton” http://www.brighton-bed-and-breakfast.co.uk/27-bed-and-breakfast-brighton.php  is one of the town’s finest Bed and Breakfasts. With nicely presented décor, it is a stone’s throw from the beach, Brighton pier and the city’s famous shopping lanes. Rooms start at £60 a night. Apart from Brighton’s vast selection of B&B’s there are hundreds of rooms and homes available through Airbnb, with prices starting at £30.

A hut on the sea

weekendFancy a more quirky seaside weekend break? Shaldon Village, near Torquay, has waterfront beach huts http://www.shaldonbeachhuts.co.uk  that are one step short of being at sea. Kitted out with a kitchen, bed, bathroom and dining area, the beach huts offer privacy and a touch of luxury without breaking the bank.

Huts that sleep 2-4 start at £120 for two nights and drop to £110 for three nights or more. It is a three-hour drive from the M25 or two hours by train from Paddington to Dawlish.

Into the countryside

weekendSuffolk is a great option for exploring the countryside without a lengthy drive or train journey. It is about two hours from London with train prices as low £13. To get back to nature why not head to Ivy Grange Farm’s yurt village https://www.ivygrangefarm.co.uk/ at Halesworth? It has campfires and plenty of outdoor activities and manages to blend outdoor living with luxury glamping.

It is a two-hour drive from the M25 or two hours 15 minutes by train from Liverpool Street Station to nearby Brampton. Prices start at £190 for two nights in a family-sized yurt, so it is well within the budget of a couple or two singles with £150 each in their pockets.

On the cheap

weekendIf you’re not after luxury and keen to travel further from London then a “camping pod” in Yorkshire will cost as little as £30 a night. The pods at Hillcrest Park,  http://goglamping.net/glamping-yorkshire-hillcrest-park/ 11 miles from Darlington, are basic wooden huts that require you to bring bedding and camping equipment. Bathrooms and showers are all shared and the site offers Wifi for a small charge.

These pods are cheap, cheerful and a relaxed city get-away. It is about a four-hour drive from London or two and a half hours by train from Kings Cross.

So if you’re a tired city couple or even a weary group of London students, you DO have options for getting out of town. Why not pack your bags for some fresh air and a quick trip out of London?
