The 3 Best 10km Runs in London

If there’s one thing we love about London, it’s the views you get in the city. When the sun is shining and you stop for a moment to take it all in you’re more than likely to fall in love with this place all over again.

As a runner, whether new or experienced, you’re used to sharing the streets with pedestrians, tourists, cyclists, taxis, cars, busses… the list goes on. But every once in a while, an organised event comes along and gives you the opportunity to claim the streets just for yourself in the heart of town (even if it might be with 15k other runners!).

We put together the Top 3 10km distance events in London to give you something to train for and keep you occupied over the coming months…

Vitality London 10km

10kTopping the poll was this late Spring race held over the late May Bank Holiday Monday preceded by a One Mile event on the Sunday with races for the whole family to take part in. The even takes over Green Park turning it into a festival of kinds where you can soak up the atmosphere of everything happening over the weekend.

Being London, the course is pretty flat with just a couple of hills thrown in – which you really should utilise to run as fast as possible downhill and gain yourself a little time!

The finish line brings Buckingham Palace back into sight as you run along St James Park. Typically, this event is very well organised, a beautiful route and never fails to disappoint providing another stunning medal to add to your growing collection! https://www.vitalitylondon10000.co.uk

The British 10km

10kTaking place in July each year, it’s the next in line for our 10km London series. This event has changed organisers numerous times over the years and is now under the Virgin Sport umbrella for 2017. It also has a reputation for being one of the most expensive races in town but I guess closing off the roads in Central London does not come cheap. If you do however take the plunge and enter, you’re in for a treat.

Starting around the Green Park area, there usually is quite a fanfare at the start line.

The course is a mix of flat, gradual inclines and declines but nothing that makes you have to dig really, really deep. You’ll be too busy enjoying the cheers from the crowds lining the streets anyway! The 2016 route took us through Piccadilly Circus, Regents Street, Trafalgar Square, the Strand, Embankment and then finished on Whitehall where you can collect the next bit of bling for your collection! https://uk.virginsport.com/event/westminster-2017/british-10k

London Winter Run

10kOrganised by Human Race, this 10k event has been going strong for three years now. Being the only mass participation event in London over the winter months, it’s perfect for this training for a Spring Marathon. You’ve plenty of time to get ready for this event if you choose it as your first as it’s next taking place in February 2018. Early bird entries are open now so there are no excuses!

After starting at Trafalgar Square, this races takes you on a tour of the city via the City of London. Dependant on the weather, the crowds can be minimal in parts but the supporters that are on the route are always full of energy.

Added to the snow zones, penguin parties and polar bear hugs which all come as part of the event, this one is perfect for the feel good spirit when you just may be losing the will to keep running. http://www.londonwinterrun.co.uk/
