What were you doing at 25 years old? Neymar is an icon, a legend, a hero, an inspiration for millions but he has became a saviour in the same light as one Lionel Messi.
How often do you see the tricky Brazilian score more than one in a big game? Not often. How often do you see Leo score 3 against the worst team in the league? Very often.
Neymar has often been in the shadows to Lionel Messi but things have changed. Against PSG he reached out of his shadow and marked his territory. But this time, it was on the grandest stage of all, in the most electrifying fashion. The comeback Barcelona pulled off against PSG was the greatest in the history of football and they did it without their talisman, because, a new talisman was born. In Messi, Barcelona have a man who is like god on earth; if he wants try hard, he can’t be stopped, his swagger and guile on the pitch makes him unstoppable. On the flip side, Neymar is the opposite, his tricks, flicks, arrogance and persistence reminds you a little of the enemy (Cristiano Ronaldo).
How did Neymar takeover you ask? When your team is as far behind as what Barcelona were, then to claw it back to lose all hope and have 0.1% chance, the greatest players of our time are the ones who turn that 0.1% chance into a 100% chance; that’s what Neymar did last night. He defied the gods of football, Messi included and did the unthinkable. The moment he took over Messi was the moment Suarez dived for a penalty. Neymar stormed over, grabbed the ball from Suarez’ hands and said ‘this ones on me’. This is only 4 minutes after he bent in an unstoppable free kick from an impossible angle.
As he steps up, Messi bites his lip, Barcelona stands still, a 25 year old who’s been in the shadows of the greatest player of our time for 3 years slots it the other side of the keeper, the dream is on, the chase is on and its been lead by the future Ballon D’Or winner.
Take a pause for a moment. Could you have done anything like that at 25? Lets say, you work at Tesco, your manager gets all the stock in every morning, one morning, you decide I want to do it but you don’t know where the paperwork is or the process; do you do it? You don’t.
Neymar is one of a kind, some players thrive off the pressure situations, the moments that can turn you into legends; he is one of them. Dare I say, he has the perfect mix of Ronaldo and Messi within him.
