As every season goes by, it seems we’re always pondering whether this might be Liverpool’s year. Eight weeks into the season and you start to believe it may well be Liverpool’s season, new manager and all the new signings seem to be gelling quite well and you start hearing the ‘this is our season’ from every Liverpool fans mouth.
Lets skip to the good bit, eight weeks later, Liverpool have stumbled into 4th or 5th sometimes even 6th and the same old story comes out, ‘we’ve got injuries, our squad isn’t big enough, we don’t spend enough’, but imagine knowing that for the last 10 years and not doing anything about it?
You may argue, at times, Liverpool’s squad has had some solid depth, in particular under Rafa Benetiz but again, lets pause a moment. If Fernando Torres picked up an injury, the alternative option was often someone below par, say David N’Gog or say Dirk Kuyt played as a striker. Maybe I’m being too critical? But wasn’t that the team that finished oh so close to winning the league? Lets skip a bit closer to the current times, Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that finished 2nd. If Luis Suarez picked up an injury, Iago Aspas was the cover; the same man who took a short corner straight to Moses in the dying minutes of a title defining game against Chelsea to sum up his short-lived and rather over-hyped Liverpool stay.
The final sentence of the above paragraph is actually what I’m getting at here. The underlining problem at Liverpool isn’t the fact that they don’t have a big enough squad, nor is it the fact that their managers have often been random appointments such as Rodgers himself, (although he did have great character). The problem at Anfield sits below the radar; the YouTube highlight reel of every possible signing. Okay, so the above reasons could be held responsible.
But the main reason here is; every VERY real negative, is turned into a deluded Donald Trump-level positive. Such as, the title, Liverpool reckon not being in the Champions League is a huge plus for a title chase; can we just bear in mind that the squad at hand currently wouldn’t be able to compete with Chelsea or Manchester City even if they played half the games and played with no referee (seen as refs are often to blame when Liverpool don’t win). So what do you do? You get into the Champions League first. Get a top four spot, then you can start thinking about a title race because the best players play for Champions League level teams; not Europa League chasers.
The key for Liverpools success is to simmer down (and stop watching YouTube highlights on new signings, even Pogba looks good on YouTube). Let me quickly take you back to that Chelsea game, who remembers the chanting and the flares prior to the team bus arriving to Anfield before that game? Talk about pressure eh? The reason Liverpool were so close that season is because the whole team over-performed and nobody saw it coming! It’s like trying to break into someones house, getting up the stairs and then playing your music on full-blast!
