Time for all Reggae fans to celebrate. A box of recordings of Bob Marley and the Wailers was found in a Kensal Rise apartment in North London where the band used to stay.According to the Guardian who broke the story, the tapes had been in the apartment for over 40 years and were water damaged.
Jazz singer Louis Hoover received the tapes and handed to over to a sound technician to see if they could be restored. Martin Nichols said that he “spent hours on hours, inch by inch, painstakingly cleaning all the gunge off until they were ready for a process called ‘baking,’ to allow them to be played safely.”
The result after the tapes were restored, according to Hoover “made the hair on the back of our necks stand up and genuine shivers ran up our spines with joy.” The tapes carry Marley’s live recordings from his concerts in London and Paris between 1974 and 1978 that were recorded on a mobile 24-track studio truck that the Rolling Stones had loaned to Marley. The songs include “No Woman No Cry”, “Exodus”, “I Shot The Sheriff”, and “Jammin”.
Just the thought of being able to listen to Bob Marley’s original recordings of these songs will thrill the lovers of the great man and Reggae all over the world. Now if you’re really feeling it, go to Jamaica and visit his old home which is now a museum..
