Switzerland isn’t somewhere you go for a cheap holiday – it’s somewhere you go if you have the money and want everything at a premium quality. Everything in Switzerland from the food, through to the city scenery to the beautiful mountains is of the utmost quality. You know that when you pay for something you will get something back short of perfection. There’s no wonder all the people and dogs – lots of dogs – are so happy all the time.
My trip was short but oh-so-sweet. I was in Zurich for two days then went to Arosa for some skiing and to have a white Christmas – something Londoners don’t get too often unfortunately. I’ve also been to Geneva many times and I highly recommend Geneva in the summer with its beautiful landscapes.
Zurich is a beautiful city centre that has a great balance between a busy city where you can find all the shops you need, and also a relaxing city where you can sit down overlooking the lake without a worry in the world. To define Zurich in one image, you can be walking down the street on a Tuesday at 3pm and see locals sitting outside on cowhide chairs toasting their champagne glasses and laughing the day away. In short, living the life.
You can’t leave Zurich without going to Läderach Chocolatier whether you like chocolate or not. I don’t have a sweet tooth at all, but this is my favourite chocolate in the whole world. Right inside the shop you can see the huge slabs of different flavoured chocolate called bark, and you buy however much you want based on weight and they crack off that amount for you. All of the food in Switzerland is divine and you can’t leave without eating a Bratwurst, any kind of bread, chocolate, schnitzel, fondue or raclette. The salads and soups are also incredible and I have no idea how they make something so simple so delicious every time.
Getting to the beautiful mountains in Arosa is made easy with just two trains that spiral up the mountains with the most breathtaking scenery you could imagine for a local train. Once there you feel like you’ve been transported into a Utopia where children are literally ice-skating around the frozen lake and horse and carriages are waiting for anyone who would like a ride around the mountains.
A lot of the hotels in Arosa are a stones-throw away from the ski schools so it’s easy to wake up in the morning and go skiing within 5 minutes of stepping outside. This year was unfortunately not the best for snow, although when skiing on the mountains you wouldn’t realise as it seems perfectly powdered and not much wind-chill despite the altitude. Having lunch at the top of the mountain makes you look around and realise how beautiful the world is and how lucky you are to be in Switzerland and you feel like you could never take nature for granted again.
Switzerland is a country that everyone needs to go to at least once in their lifetime. Whether you’re a lover of big cities or someone who loves being in the great outdoors, Switzerland has everything you could ever want or need and at a quality that you can’t find anywhere else.
