London is probably best known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world to live so getting and staying fit can be expensive. So if you want to get fit but your finances are tight, it’s no surprise that your sweat schedule will take a back seat to other more important areas.
But lucky for you, we know everything London has to offer and we’ve come up with a list activities that’ll keep you occupied all week and won’t break the bank.
Running Clubs
If you’re a runner, there’s no better way to get a dose of the outdoors and take in the sights of your neighbourhood the funding the pavement. If you’re more of a lone ranger, no problem but if you fancy company and need the motivation there is almost a run club to choose from each and every night of the week.
Nike Run Clubs have been going for years, based from a number of their store locations including Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, whilst Adidas Runners have a mix of morning and evening sessions in South or North London.
With both, you can usually choose a group by distance, have somewhere to leave your bags and also seasoned runners who pace the groups that can answer any of your burning running questions. If you’re more of a weekend runner, the you have to check out your local Park Run – this is a weekly timed 5km event – and they’ve formed quite the community all over the world since they launched.
Studio Classes
This city is never short a new studio based class and if barre is more your thing there are options. Sweaty Betty launch a new in-store fitness concept with each season with class available to book one week in advance.
You might be spoilt for choice with over 70 different classes per week from yoga to boot camp. We checked out the schedule and spotted Latin Salsa Dancing, Boxfit and Pilates…just to whet the appetite.
Reebok also have what are known as Fit Hub’s; dedicated small spaces in store where the put on functional training sessions. The Covent Garden location also regularly team up with GymBox to offer their latest timetable sensations such as Frame Fitness.
Outdoor
Decided you want to make the most of the outdoors if it’s not raining?!
Or rain doesn’t phase you?! The North Face run weekly Mountain Athletics sessions where they get you ready for your next outdoor adventure whether that be climbing a mountain or hitting the slopes.
They regularly organise weekend events too so you can get some time out of the city and hit the trails; all you have to do is book yourself a space on the minibus, pack your running shoes and set an alarm to make it to store for the early start.
If you’re looking for more of a boot camp workout, Nike Training Club run weekly sessions (which are now for both men and women) in local parks such as Victoria Park. Also, new kids on the block, Our Parks also run a huge variety of sessions in local parks supported by the respective councils.
Yoga
If you’re looking for something a little less sweat and a ton more zen then look up your nearest Lululemon store. The Canadian brand hit the UK shores just a few short years ago and they brought all of the North American charm with them.
This includes weekly complimentary yoga offerings (and sometimes more including run clubs) at each store location. Sunday morning yoga can become your weekly ritual at Covent Garden followed by a spot of people watching and coffee drinking in the market.
Online
But, if you’ve fallen into the typical trap of dwelling in London and find yourself short on time, you don’t even have to leave the confines of your office or home. If you can’t make it to the studio, Sweaty Betty have many of their workouts video and accessible via their website. The North Face also recently launched a 6 week Mountain Athletics training plan to get you ready to hit the slopes where they stream live on Facebook every Monday morning and will provide the video footage after if you can’t make the scheduled time to tune in. Or, Nike have their app, Nike Training Club, which is like having a Personal Trainer in your pocket. Be warned though, it takes up quite a bit of space on your very smart device but it’s worth it; with workouts raging from 15 minutes to 45 minutes the app is also able to set you a four week programme, test your fitness and suggest workouts.
You know what they say, when a person is tired of London, they are tired of life! There is always something new and fresh on the London Fitness scene! Staying fit is actually easy!
