Alexandre Lacazette is one of the most talked about strikers in Europe, with all of the top six clubs in the Premier League seeming to be keen on him and even some of Europe’s elite such as Juventus being mentioned in the transfer rumours. The French striker’s YouTube highlights are pretty boring due to his goal-poacher style of play but his tenacity and passion for the game resemble that of a South American footballer.
In a rather slow rise to fame, Lacazette waited four years to play first-team football in France and then suddenly became a star, scoring 76 goals in the last three seasons.
Where next?
The long-term Lyon player is rumoured to be Manchester United’s “Plan B” if Atletico Madrid cannot be enticed to release Antoine Griezmann. Arsenal are also on the hunt for a new striker as Alexis Sanchez is set to depart and Liverpool continues to search for a deadly forward to replace Luis Suarez. Chelsea have also been mentioned as potential suitors for the talented Frenchman and Juventus could be tempted if Paulo Dybala heads to Real Madrid. In other words, Lacazette has a lot of options.
If I were Lacazette I would be looking at which team could give me the most minutes. At the age of 26, moving to a club like Juventus could be a poor choice as Gonzalo Higuain is still the perfect fit for the Italian champions. It would be a similar story at both Chelsea and Manchester United with Diego Costa holding him out of the first team at the Bridge and Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to block his progress in Manchester.
That leaves Arsenal and Liverpool if the decision is to be based on what is best for Lacazette’s prospects. Arsene Wenger’s French background could help to lure Lacazette to the Emirates but the striker has strongly hinted that he would only move to a Champions League club. That would leave Lacazette favouring Liverpool, which is probably not his most exciting option but could be the most realistic.
What can we expect?
Unfortunately for Lacazette, Jurgen Klopp won’t be keen to spend the kind of money Lyon is chasing (£45-55m) so the Liverpool fans will be left waiting for a star number nine. I’m not convinced that Chelsea or Juventus would be too keen to change their attacking line-ups too much, considering the fact both have just cruised to league titles. Wenger will probably join Liverpool in refusing to pay the big money, an instinct that has long been Arsenal’s Achilles heel when it comes to signing big players.
In the end, Lacazette’s future will probably come down to a reasonably simple question of money. The only club that will pay the silly money demanded and that will feel under pressure to make a stand-out signing is Manchester United. Lacazette may not be a Jose Mourinho-type player but the United boss doesn’t have much choice and could make the winning bid for the French star.
