Chelsea has returned to the pinnacle of English football after Italian boss Antonio Conte’s astonishing debut season in the Premier League, in which he managed to ooze class and dominate a very competitive league.
The ex-Juventus boss has been known for his tactical purchases so it is going to be an interesting summer for Chelsea but who should be coming and going if the Blues are to defend their title?
Heading for the exit?
There are strong rumours at Stamford Bridge surrounding Cesc Fabregas, the ex-Arsenal man has been a regular substitute for Chelsea this season. By the looks of his social media pages he will be searching for a new club this summer. As unlikely as it may seem, Newcastle United has been closely linked with the Spanish midfielder and it might prove a smart move for him to head north and join up with Rafa Benitez.
There are zero doubts in my mind that Conte will freshen up his back-line with signings but I also think the door will be shown to Gary Cahill. Despite being the captain for much of this season, he has made more individual errors than any other defender in the Premier League (yes, that includes Dejan Lovren) and his lack of speed left Chelsea in trouble several times during the season.
Apart from scoring the title-winning goal, Michy Batshuayi hardly kicked a ball all season and the young Belgian striker is set to leave the Bridge for France. Lyon looks to be his most suitable option, which should trigger a striker merry-go-round that will include a move for Alexander Lacazette to somewhere in the Premier League.
Who Chelsea could sign?
There is absolutely no doubt that Conte will raid Serie A. The transfer market hasn’t opened yet but there are rumours in Italy that Leonardo Bonucci has already agreed a deal to sign for Chelsea, which will be announced after the Champions League final.
He will be joined by Seria A rival Radja Nainggolan, the Roma centre-midfielder who has admitted that life in Rome and second place in the league is far below his career expectations.
The Belgium star is expected to cost up to £60m but with 11 goals and five assists and having won his side more points than any other midfielder this season, he could be the ideal man to replace Fabregas.
The biggest summer move for Chelsea will be the return of Romelu Lukaku. Jose Mourinho axed the front man when he ran the Blues but Lukaku has hinted at a return on several occasions this season. The fact that he just missed out on the Golden Boot may lower Lukaku’s price from the £60m that Everton had sought but the Belgian will still be a pricey signing. He could be just the right man to partner Diego Costa.
The Verdict?
Exits: Fabregas, Cahill and Batshuayi along with half of their youth team, which is currently one of the best in Europe.
Signings: Lukaku, Bonucci, Naingollan and Kieran Tierney.
