Football: Transfers Could Save Wenger’s Job

Arsenal’s season has been one to forget for a lot of people, especially manager Arsene Wenger. It was a season in which fans called for his head on numerous occasions and where players have been linked with other clubs every other week. Whether the 67-year-old stays or not, it is going to be a big summer for Arsenal’s transfers so who should be coming and going this summer?

Heading for the exit?

transfersAlexis Sanchez has been Arsenal’s one big positive from this campaign, having racked up 23 goals and 10 assists so far in the Premier League. But the Chilean international has spoken out on several occasions about his ambition to win trophies and opposition managers have constantly praised his efforts to drag Arsenal into the top four places.

That has led to several clubs being linked to the little number seven; Chelsea, Juventus and Atletico Madrid seem to be waiting to pounce the second the transfer window opens.

Having arrived at the Emirates for £35m, I expect him to leave for a similar amount as he hasn’t developed his game to the next level since his arrival in the PL. Antonio Conte will more than likely lose Eden Hazard this summer, making me think that Sanchez will reverse Petr Cech’s journey and take the rare jump from the red side of London to the blue.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another player that Arsenal fans have rated highly but his eagerness to play first team football in his favoured position will spell the end of his six-year stay at the club. Liverpool and Everton have been eyeing up the England midfielder and I expect him to move to Everton where he should slot perfectly into Ronald Koeman’s midfield. Lucas Perez seems to be on the way out after being given just 265 minutes on the field during a measly 11 Premier League appearance for Arsenal, and Fenerbache is keen to sign him. Kieran Gibbs will also be shown the door this summer.

Who might Arsenal sign?

transfersSead Kolasinac has already signed for the Gunners on a free from Schalke 04, which is why I believe Gibbs will leave. The Bosnian full-back will add some steel to Arsenal’s shaky back line.

The big signing that Wenger will be hunting is the arrival of a world-class striker. Alexander Lacazette has won admiration from across Europe in the past couple of seasons due to his magnificent form at Lyon.

With Antoine Griezmann probably heading to Manchester United, and Liverpool unlikely to be able to afford £50m, it leaves the door open for Arsenal to step in for Lacazette. Wenger has often managed to persuade young French players to join him in London and I believe Lacazette is the exact player Arsenal needs and one who might save Wenger’s job. Let the transfers begin.

The Verdict?

Exits: Gibbs, Perez, Sanchez and Chamberlain.

Signings: Kolasinac, a few random young players, Lacazette and Flamini.
