Spurs have had another splendid season in the Premier League. They are runners-up for the second straight year and arguably have played the best football in England over those two seasons under Mauricio Pochettino. With an impressive young squad, Spurs will find it tough to keep hold of their talent, let alone strengthen their squad, so we’ll take a look at who should be on the way in and out this summer if Spurs are to go that one final step forward next season.
Heading for the exit?
There is only one place to start after the row at the end of the season between Kyle Walker and Pochettino. It has been made clear that Walker is wanted by Manchester City and Barcelona. Both clubs have been searching for a right-back for a while and the England defender would certainly suit the style of football played in Manchester.
Pep Guardiola’s side has been crying out for a top quality full-back all season and I expect him to snap up Walker for around £30m. Although most will be expecting Dele Alli to be lured away, his recent comments on the squad needing to stick together highlighted his intention to stay in London, which was great news for every Spurs fan.
Instead of Alli, I expect £30m man Moussa Sissoko to be heading out of London and back to France with Marseille. From the moment he signed it looked like he would be a flop, with fans launching social media attacks on the price tag paid for the Frenchman.
He has played a total of just 903 minutes in the league this season and it has proved a horrible transfer for a player who was talented enough to outshine Paul Pogba at the Euros. A move back to France could be what he needs to regain that level of performance.
Who could Spurs sign?
This summer will be one of patience for Spurs fans, who are used to several players arriving at the club each transfer season. Instead I believe this summer will be all about Tottenham trying to keep hold of its stars.
In terms of improving the squad, an extra striker could be needed in case Harry Kane picks up any kind of injury next season and Bournemouth’s Joshua King has been in demand after his exceptional campaign. The ex-Manchester United striker would cost around £10m, a bargain in the current transfer climate.
In an attempt to replace Walker, Spurs have been closely linked with Juventus full back Dani Alves and as surprising as it may seem I firmly expect him to be on his way to London. The ex-Barcelona star has won everything in Italy and recently admitted to being tempted to move to the Premier League, with the proviso that he only liked the idea of moving to London.
He could be the perfect replacement for Walker and would cost only about £10m.
The Verdict?
Exits: Sissoko, Walker and possibly Georges-Kévin N’Koudou.
Signings: King, Alves and a young South American no one will have ever heard of.
