The floor to ceiling windows and skyline views of London penthouses are a dream that already have many of us with our heads in the clouds. If you haven’t been inspired by our selection of luxury houseboats in London you may find dry land more your sort of thing.
Take a deep breath and brace yourself. You know that feeling when you find a property price that might just be within your capability only to find it is for a parking space? What about the pain of reading that a start-up entrepreneur in his or her mid-20s is making your annual salary every day? These leave most of us in existential agony while a few brave others may just mutter: “one day”. Yeah, one day…
Many London penthouses spend much of their time unoccupied, often owned by anonymous foreign companies and used by their real owners during visits to London. Given the purchase price they are almost always fitted with the height of luxury for those who can afford them. The rest of us still secretly hope to nail that start-up idea or pen a best-selling album in the faint hope of one day living the dream.
3 Bedrooms, Drury Lane, WC2B: £4.25m
There is a lift between the two floors of this penthouse for when you’re too lazy to climb the stairs to bed. While each bedroom has its own bathroom the master bedroom also has a steam room – just remember to draw the curtains on those floor-to-ceiling windows. The other bedrooms have their own balconies. As well as underground parking there is a separate storage room that seems to function as a rich person’s shed or garage.
3 Bedrooms, Victoria St, Westminster, SW1H: £5.1m
At the top of a “mansion flat” development, this recently renovated penthouse has three bedrooms with marble en-suite bathrooms beneath the top floor reception room. As well as underfloor heating, a concierge service and underground car parking, Savills Estate Agents believe likely buyers will be drawn by the £4 billion regeneration project in the surrounding area near Westminster Abbey, which includes a Jamie Oliver restaurant and a Jo Malone perfumery. Just how you thought the super-rich lived…
3 Bedrooms, Victoria St,Westminster, SW1H: £5.25m to £11m
These thoroughly modern apartments feature smooth, high quality fittings and underfloor heating as well as a “comfort cooling” system. Residents have access to a gym and underground parking.
The properties continue the trend of having monochrome, geometric furniture that matches the surrounding skyline for most of the year.
This is a whole development of apartments so no doubt the true top-floor penthouse will be fought for at the £11 million end of the price bracket.
9 Bedrooms, Regent’s Park, NW1: £15.95m
A third-floor “lateral apartment” rather than a top-floor penthouse, this beautiful French-inspired property from Foxton’s has four reception rooms and underground parking. The floor plan resembles a labyrinth filled with Rococo-style furniture for a more aristocratic taste.
The fact that it has nine bedrooms suggests it would make a lovely alternative to your current shared house. One mortgage repayment calculation by Alexander Hall came to £73,461 per month after a deposit of £4 million. Divided among nine occupants that breaks down to a mere £2000 per week. Easy.
3 Bedrooms, Knightsbridge, SW1X: £18.5m
Eighty-six of Britain’s most expensive residences are in the one complex, at One Hyde Park. Built in 2011, it was designed by Graham Stirk and Richard Rogers, the architects behind the slanted skyscraper at 122 Leadenhall Street in the City of London, commonly known as “the Cheesegrater”. Many of its apartments are financial parking spots for foreigners keen to get some of their wealth into the UK economy or, more to the point, to get it out of their home economies.
The three-bedroom apartment featured left is under offer on Rightmove for £18.5 million while a one-bedroom flat sold for £5.5 million in December 2016. They feature underground parking as well as a temperature-controlled wine store. The three-bedroom flat features state of the art temperature control with triple-glazed windows while the bathrooms are clad in Italian marble.
