Football: Selling Messi and How to Fix Barcelona

Barcelona have hit a rocky patch, with some inconsistent results and several players falling out with head coach Luis Enrique. For the first time in a number of years, Barcelona fans are screaming out for an overhaul which should start with Lionel Messi leaving.

barcelonaThe Catalans have lost their fear factor to some extent. PSG and Juventus have exposed their vulnerabilities with Champions League victories although the PSG tie did take a monumental turn in the second leg when Barca pulled off a 6-1 win for one of the greatest comebacks in history thanks to the brilliance of Neymar rather than the whole team or the manager.

Unfortunately for Enrique he has become Barcelona’s coach at a time when most of the players who have excelled in previous years have reached their peak and in decline. Andres Iniesta stands out more than anybody else. The little maestro’s displays in the big games this season have been a glaring insight into his downfall as the man who once pulled the strings for Messi. With just three assists and one goal this season, not to mention the loss of his famous ability to weave in and out of defenders, it seems he will be the first to exit in this overhaul as he expected to retire.

Barcelona fans seem to forget that Enrique is set to step down at the end of this season leaving them without a manager and no sign of who may take his place.  Messi trained on his before the Juve game, further highlighting the problems in the camp. The comeback against PSG at the Camp Nou had nothing to do with Enrique, Messi or Iniesta; it was Neymar showing it is time for a change of leadership. Once Enrique and Iniesta leave at the end of the season, Andres Gomes is also set to head back to Portugal leaving Barcelona short in midfield.

How do Barcelona fix that problem? Buy Phillipe Coutinho. The Liverpool man has been in demand for a while and would slot perfectly into the position that will be vacated by Andres. That would be the first stage of overhauling the squad. The goalkeeping situation hasn’t been resolved since Victor Valdes left on bad terms. David De Gea could potentially fill that void and adding Paulo Dybala to the world-class forwards would probably fix the current issues on the pitch.

Dare I say, it may be time for Messi to step down too. Neymar needs space to become the main man, which will not happen while the Argentinian is leading the team. Not only does the Brazil forward need to become the face of the club, Messi’s constant bust-ups with management have become a big distraction in Catalonia and his sale would fund the above signings.

Sell Messi. Buy Coutinho, Dybala and De Gea. Say goodbye to the old days and become a well-oiled machine with a front three that would be unstoppable, and the ego of one man will no longer be overshadowing the greatest club in the world.
