If you’re not an Arsenal fan you will either be feeling a little sorry for the club right now or laughing yourself sick at the Gunners’ bad luck.
I’m embarrassed for the club. Theo Walcott’s comments after Crystal Palace battered his side 3-0 summed up what is wrong with Arsenal. “We could tell from the first minute Palace wanted it more,” he admitted. Someone needs to tell Theo that “want” is a thing you control – if his side wanted to win more they could have easily done it, so why aren’t they? It feels like the Gunners are being forced to play football when they would rather be at home posting on social media about their holidays. Walcott confirmed that with his answers, unintentionally confirming that the players don’t want to play under Arsene Wenger anymore.
Arsenal are playing like a Sunday league team. The space between the forwards and the defence is big enough to fit a bus. The forwards lose the ball and refuse to track back. The midfield are struggling to string together three passes that move the team further up the pitch as every pass is to someone two yards away. I’m screaming at my television and I’m not an Arsenal fan.
The lack of desire shown against Palace summed up everything about Arsenal in the last two to five years. Bottlers. Some fans will blame Arsene, who has signed every player in the squad. I would blame the owners and the player’s failure to take the responsibility on their own shoulders.
There is no quick fix for any of the problems Arsenal is facing at the moment. Sacking Wenger could be a fatal mistake as there is a serious lack of top managers out there and the other big clubs are improving hugely every season. The Frenchman has had a great ability to block or counter any negative press aimed at his players but unfortunately that has allowed the team to dodge responsibility for their mistakes; they will miss that more than anything if he leaves. Some of the blame does sit with Wenger due to his stingy transfer policy as the Frenchman always prefers to grab a bargain.
You could give him £60 million to sign a world-class striker and he’ll sign four under-21 players with great potential. There aren’t too many other things wrong with the 67-year-old. One thing is for sure, there are far too many average footballers regularly playing first team football for Arsenal. Theo Walcott is the best example. He has a poor goals-to-games ratio and a poor attitude, which only seems to improve when he enters contract negotiations every few years. Theo is also a genuine happy loser, which he proved at Selhurst Park.
Is it bad luck, timing, management or signings? That is the decision that the board will be making very soon.
In the meantime, Arsenal fans should remember that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Just look at Liverpool.
