Clothes Shopping When You Are Normal Size

Mosty people aren’t shaped like models but fashion brands often forget that when designing and making clothes.Most people are ‘normal size.’ Recently there has been a surge in the number of retailers wanting to cater to a larger market as the media has slowly encouraged people to love their body shape, whatever it is.

Gok Wan pioneered dressing for your body shape years ago with “Gok’s Fashion Fix” but now shops need to take this one step further and use different mannequins with a wider variety of shapes rather than encouraging shoppers to buy clothes that never actually suit their bodies.

The best High Street stores in London that cater to a variety of body shapes are:

Topshop

As a short girl, I find that Topshop caters really well for different heights. There’s a petite section for shorter women which is great when trying to find jeans as the hems in most shops are usually too long for me and I always have to cuff the bottoms up.

There is also a tall section for women with the opposite problem. Not every piece of clothing has tall and petite sizes available but there is a good selection. In the Oxford Circus store there is also a maternity section, something that few High Street stores have.

ASOS

The online retailer ASOS does a fantastic job catering to thousands of women (and men) with different body shapes. There is a curve & plus size section that has a wide variety of styles from casual everyday wear to sexy dresses.

Like Topshop, there is also a large maternity section. For shoes, ASOS has its main collection as well as a wide fit section which is a big deal as many women struggle to find shoes to fit comfortably. ASOS makes sure to have regular fittings with its customers to ensure it can assist as many people as possible and find the real average for buyers.

One last bonus about its large selections and options is that ASOS carries a lot of different brands. That means that the bras that can be bought online go up to larger sizes for the more busty women. Most stores stock up to a 34D only but a lot of women are larger than this and struggle to find nice bras without having to go to specialist stores.

Mango

I find that Mango goes under the radar a lot but it has a lot of great pieces at affordable prices, and its customers do not all end up with the same clothes.

Recently Mango opened a new section called Violeta that caters for plus-size women. Personally, I think it was a wonderful move to name the subdivision Violeta rather than “curve” or “plus-size” as it doesn’t have connotations that make women feel bad about being larger than a size eight.

The average UK woman is a size 14, yet that is somehow considered more of a plus-size than a normal size so it’s about time that retailers tried to project a more realistic view of women’s bodies.
