Our predictions for wellness in 2017 are here! These are the top 5 health, fitness and wellness topics that we’ll all be talking about in the year ahead.
In 2016, we saw everything from coconut oil to juice cleanses, bone broth to barre class, sugar was demonised, fat (good ones, anyway) were held in high esteem whilst HIIT (high intensity interval training) was hailed as the most time efficient way to workout yet gain all the same benefits.
Everyone’s focus seems to be on what’s natural and healthy and some even think it’s verging on obsession. But one thing we can all agree on is that the wellness scene is here to stay!
No1. Exercise: Boutique or Basic?
The last year saw a continual explosion in the fitness market with boutique studio after boutique studio opening its doors in London. In the last couple of years, we kinda became commitment phobes, shying away from memberships at a single studio and picked up on the “active passport” concept allowing us to flit between any studio or class that your heart so desires! However, for 2017, the feelings in the air seem to be nodding towards a tightening of purse strings which will no doubt impact how much we’re prepared to spend on classes.
We predict a trend of heading back to basics, with more people then ever considering running (which is technically free) as an option, along with no frills gyms or just getting a group of friends together for a workout in your neighbouring park.
No2. Technology: There’s An App For That
Whilst some of us are now sweating all over our respective cities, there are others not yet brave enough, or just not into it. The growth of online communities and programmes for fitness sky rocketed in 2016 and for 2017 we predict a whole heap of fitness / wellbeing apps to go with these communities. Online Personal Trainers like Kayla Itsines (Aus) launched her own app after the success of her online training programme and we’re sure that Personal Trainers like the infamous Joe Wicks (UK – Lean in 15) will soon follow! Add these to the apps already out there like Nike Training Club which has recently been revamped to be bigger an better than ever before, or MyFitnessPal which is owned by Under Armour and you’ve turned your phone into your own personal trainer!
No3. Eating: Being Vegan Isn’t Just For January
January has become synonymous with Veganuary over the past couple of years; a movement where you’re encouraged to eat vegan for the full 31 days of the first month of this New Year. Outside of Veganuary though, it seems that veganism and vegetarianism is growing in popularity with many people including meat free days in their diet more for their health and wellbeing than for environmental or political reasons. You can never have too many vegetables in your diet, right?!
No4. Fashion: Sports Luxe
So we all laughed at the athleisure video parody in 2015. And then we lived out every single scene of the video. Shopping in our yoga pants, drinking coffee in our run gear… but somewhere along the lines, the fashionistas have caught on and have made Sports Luxe a thing. Your workout gear may no longer just be what you sweat in… it’s a legitimate outfit for day day… and people may not even be able to tell you’re wearing sportswear! What’s not to love?! We predict that everyone will be getting in on the game for 2017 with high street stores bringing out their own label ranges and some even collaborating with fashion designers to see athleisure on the catwalk.
No5. Mind: Let’s Meditate
We’ve been talking more and more about our mental health than ever before; it’s a conversation which needs to happen, and the more open the better. Meditation became more mainstream in 2016 and it seems it could be key to helping us reduce stress, improve our health and regain the balance we are all striving for.
Meditation doesn’t have to be particularly spiritual and it certainly does not have to take over your day either – five minutes of daily meditation can help reduce stress, improve your wellbeing and decrease aches and pains. And anywhere goes; whether you meditate on your walk, before you go to bed, on your daily commute, during a bath or on your lunch break, it’s all about finding a way to get present that works for you!
