Wash away the worries of a divided nation, economic uncertainty and social upheaval with the Nigel Farage Pub Crawl.
UKIP and Pubs. Remainer or Leaver, we all love a pint or six. However, the controversial political party has shared a stronger association with these traditional establishments than most organisations besides CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) can lay claim to. With the Brexit result we can only hope that the underdog movement will follow through with its other albeit somewhat populist campaign to Save the Pub, something we soon may all be needing. Nigel Farage’s pint has become the defining weapon of press photographers and cartoonists alike. Given we all feel now is the time for drowning concerns, as ‘Nige’ jets off to form pseudo-ambassadorial relations with Donald Trump, we look at the London haunts he has left behind in the Nigel Farage Pub Crawl. See if you can complete the circuit and still lead a country to the brink.
George & Dragon, Downe
This decorative Tudor building is Nigel Farage’s local just inside the South East of the M25. It is quite a way out so be sure to invest in a proper black cab. If the name from the Patron Saint were not enough, the traditional charm makes a perfect haunt for slaying not dragons but pies and pints. They source local produce and on Fridays offer £7 fish and chips until 8.30pm.
Address: 26 High Street, Downe, BR6 7UT Phone: 01689 889 030 http://www.georgeanddragondowne.com/
Queen’s Head, Downe
Remember hearing of Nigel Farage and his family`s ambush by a mob of ‘scum’ as he put it? This `cabaret of diversity` ousted him after failing to find him at the George & Dragon. Their weapon of choice? Not petrol bombs or flares but theatrical performances from creatives of a wealth of backgrounds representing LGBTQ+, HIV positive, refugees and others who believed themselves sidelined by UKIP’s policies.
The pub was built in 1565 in honour of Queen Elizabeth I’s visit to Downe and resembles a traditional country pub with at least four real ales available.
Lamb Tavern
Start your own coup d`etat by hitting Nigel`s regular from his Metal trading days in the 1980s. Nearest tube is Monument so you can contemplate if the obelisk would benefit from your own effigy at the top, a few flags, maybe a theme tune too. By now you are hungry, and not just for sovereignty. Beef brisket cottage pie for £15. The pound isn’t worth much anyway. Despite seeming a classic city pub the venue is well aware of the needs of its clientele with Wifi and power sockets available for workspace. But who combines work with drinking in a pub? Oh wait…
Westminster Arms
In the event that your third attempt at resigning from your party should actually succeed, find a successor! Recent leadership candidate Raheem Kassam launched his campaign to continue Nigel Farage’s work in the latter’s own favourite the Westminster Arms. The pub famously has a bell so MPs knew when to dash back to parliament for a vote. Hopefully they shan’t be late for the Article 50 bill…
The Lord Moon Of The Mall
So this isn’t really one of Nigel Farage’s, but Tim Martin who founded Wetherspoons in 1979 was an avid supporter of the Leave campaign. His pubs distributed half a million beer mats promoting the Leave vote. With typically cheap beer prices, a vast range of real ales and yes- European blondes and brunns- you should really have started off here if our topic allowed.
Address:16-18 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY
By this point, any debates or arguments have hopefully turned to merriment. But the television screen rolling news here means you can gaze up and watch the action unfold.
