Football: 5 Reasons to Back Man United

The Premier League title currently sits in London but with the superb starts from the two Manchester clubs, the trophy looks like it will be heading back up north.  Why does United look such a plausible favourite for the championship?

Return of Zlatan

favouriteManchester United’s firepower going forward has played a big part in its early season goal frenzy with Romelu Lukaku leading the charge.

Although Lukaku has been in super form he has still blown several big chances which have been covered by the fact his team has won. The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic gives Jose Mourinho a wonderful alternative if there are problems with Lukaku, and United’s top scorer from last season will be keen to fight for first team football. With that in mind, you can only expect the Red Devils to become stronger as the season goes on with more than one top striker capable of finding the back of the net.

Echoes of Chelsea ’04

favouriteThink back to Chelsea under Mourinho between 2004-06. That Chelsea team had power going forward, the steel at the back and the ability to punish the opposition at any given moment.

Aside from the quality on the pitch, the bench provided the Blues with good options in every position, which contributed vastly towards the latter part of the campaign. This United side has several similarities, with a number of options going forward and the best goalkeeper in the league. It’s a structure that would make any team the title favourite.

Jose’s second season

favouriteOne of the main reasons United is my title favourite is the manager. Mourinho’s record in big games in title-winning seasons is frightening, he always shows tactical nous against the smaller sides and he has a proven ability to push his team over the line in tight games.

The Portuguese boss has won the title in his second season in England with Chelsea, in Italy with Inter Milan (left), and in Spain with Real Madrid.

He tends to get his perfect squad assembled in his first season and then in the following season he pounces on the biggest honour in club football, the league title.

Loads of Goals

favouriteThe difference between this season and last is that United can’t stop scoring and crucially it’s not down to one player as it has been in the last few campaigns.

Mourinho’s side has a number of players who could easily score more than 10 goals with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Lukaku and Ibrahimovic vying to contribute to what should be a mammoth total of goals come the end of the season.

The Best Keeper

favouriteThe team that eventually wins the title always includes the best keeper in the league or someone who is very close to that status.

Past champions have had the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Edwin Van Der Sar, Petr Cech or even Kasper Schmeichel who was outstanding in Leicester City’s triumph. To triumph over a full season a team needs an expert between the sticks and the teams that run it close often lose out because of defensive frailties. As important as goals and world-class strikers are, having David de Gea behind the defence gives United a big advantage over its rivals.
