Fashion: How to Wear Mules in Autumn

It’s time to postpone your pedi’s and slip back into autumn’s gateway shoe, the closed toe mule. The mule was originally worn in the bedroom but is now championed for both casual and formal occasions during transitional weather times.

The original appeal of the shoe was that it can be slipped off at any moment, and that hints at spontaneity and sultriness. In modern-day terms, it makes for a heavenly “home sweet home”, toe-flick kick-off which brings the same kind of satisfaction as the highly anticipated, end of day bra removal.

Known as the ugly slipper in the ’90s, the mule is now the celebrated footwear choice both for those love who love decadence and those who fancy a minimal look. The cut is classy so they tend to look more expensive than they are. Not to mention the fact that they mean no more heel blisters!

Find our mule guide below with tips on how to style these celebrated shoes.

Despite being the most relaxed style, the clean cut of the slipper enables them to work with tailored pieces. Steer clear of traditional work tailoring and instead opt for a contrast trouser and blazer with a plain T-shirt to balance the casual. Alternatively, embrace the cosiness and go for a slouched cashmere cardigan paired with jeans. Mules are also an ideal handbag addition for post-work or wedding reception heel swaps.

Work them into your clean, neutral wardrobe for a tongue-in-cheek statement or go all in and pair your fancy feet with palazzo trousers, a silk wrap shirt and pom pom earrings. In terms of mule decor, Victorian embroidery, velvet, tassels, diamantes and feathers are the favoured and rather exquisite finishes deemed popular for this autumn/winter. For wearability, go for darker hues to disguise street tarnishing but keep your clothing colours rich for autumn. No need for head-to-toe dark, jewel hues just yet.

The Stiletto Mule

Juxtapose a classically sexier silhouette against hardy jeans or a loose, boxy maxi dress for a modern look. A pointed toe elongates the leg, especially when sans ankle strap. Pairing a V-shaped neckline with a pointed toe looks timelessly elegant and helps to bring fluidity to your look.

The Chunky Mule

Sturdier and bossier, this style is great for toughening up “prettier” counterparts. Excellent with flared, cropped trousers contrasting a long, unlined coat.

As always, it’s worth investing in a protector to keep your shoes in their prime. The Jason Markk brand is recommended for leather and suede protection, while a protective upholstery cleaner will work wonders for your velvet numbers.

“When you walk in mules, you walk a bit differently. It’s very sexy to me; you have to get your balance… Madame de Pompadour in her mules, walking around Versailles, click click click… Can you think of anything more exquisite?” – Manolo Blahnik
