Football: Our Team of the Year So Far

Four games into the season and the table seems to be taking shape already. The two Manchester clubs lead the way (as expected), Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool are up there and the bottom three are made up of sides that wouldn’t surprise you too much if they went down (West Ham, Bournemouth, Palace). Certain players have started superbly and others not so well but who makes our team of the season so far.

David De Gea

Image result for de geaPicking a goalkeeper was probably the easiest choice in the team. De Gea has gone from Spanish flop to one of the worlds best since arriving at Manchester United and so far this season has only conceded two goals in four games.

He’s looking comfortable playing against cross-ins and has also come up with some terrific saves at the right time in games.

It’s no secret that world-class goalkeepers have led most of the clubs that have won the Premier League title in the past.

Our No.1 stopper.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Image result for AzpilicuetaAnother Spaniard joins the defence (and we say Spanish players can’t defend), Azpilicueta is one of the most consistent players in the league having been a key figure in Chelsea’s title triumph last season.

The 28 year old fits perfectly into the 3-4-3 formation and has been crucial to Chelsea’s positive start to the season and looks like he is going to have another solid season.

Solid, reliable and keeps the shape together.

Ahmed Hegazi

Image result for Ahmed HegaziThis one might surprise a few of you but the new West Brom centre-back has won his side three points with a winning header on the opening day against Bournemouth.

He has also been pivotal in keeping things tight at the back for his new club and seems to be the ideal man for Tony Pulis’ men.

Reliable, workhorse, great hair.

Benjamin Mendy

Image result for mendyMendy’s arrival to Manchester City could turn out to be a PL winning signing.

That might shock you but Pep Guardiola’s teams have always had extremely dangerous full-backs that can provide assists and the Frenchman’s arrival has done exactly that.

He provides the team with the width they need and has a wonderful left foot, I’m expecting him to be in the top five for assists at the end of the season.

Stud.

Nemanja Matic

Image result for maticI still can’t believe Chelsea sold him to potential title rivals in Manchester United.

He has been the enforcer United need with his intelligent pressing and beastly size, the Red Devils have looked a force in the middle of the park.

With him in the side it has allowed the likes of Paul Pogba to excel going forward while he has controlled the holding midfield position.

Rock.

Christian Eriksen

Image result for christian eriksenWhere would Spurs be without him? Everyone looks to Harry Kane but behind every top goal scorer there’s an underappreciated assist-king.

The Denmark international has topped the fantasy league charts for points for attacking midfielders and his presence has been the key to Spurs getting points on the board despite the problems at Wembley.

He is simple irreplaceable for Mauricio Pochettino.

Kevin De Bruyne

Image result for kevin de bruyneThere really isn’t a midfielder like him. His ability to see the game pan out before it actually does is unbelievable.

The reason he’s in this team is because of his constant persistence at delivering balls into danger areas, which have led to goals, such as the 5-0 drubbing of Liverpool.

It’s impossible to leave him out with the start he has had.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Image result for Henrikh MkhitaryanA year ago he wouldn’t have been in the third best team at this stage of the season but he has been Manchester United’s talisman so far this campaign.

His tactical awareness to drop into pockets of space has allowed the forwards to run in behind and create goal scoring opportunities and as it has been very well documented, he’s one assist away from beating Philippe Coutinho’s all-time best season for assists.

Mikky is a manager’s go to midfielder.

Roberto Firmino

Image result for firminoIf it wasn’t for him Liverpool wouldn’t have scored eight goals this season.

The Brazilians movement off the ball has been impeccable and without him, the Reds’ vicious forward line would look rather average.

Plain and simple.

Romelu Lukaku

Image result for lukakuWe all knew he would score goals at United but he has been simple unstoppable.

Although he is often criticised for his lack of movement and at times his poor first touch, non of that matters when you’re finding the back of the net.

Four goals in four games, it’s impossible to leave him out.

Gabriel Jesus

Image result for gabriel jesusAnother one that we couldn’t leave out as he does what both the other two strikers do all in one. Any player who makes Sergio Aguero look like the second choice forward really is an exceptional footballer.

He’s gelled into English football superbly and looks as though he will push for the golden boot in his first full season at Manchester City.
