Football: The League’s Ten Best Players So Far

The Premier League season has started superbly with goals, drama and dubious decisions lighting up the early weeks. Some stars can dominate the start of a campaign, like Kevin Lisbie back when Charlton Athletic was top of the table after seven games and Lisbie had scored nine goals including a hat trick against Liverpool. Which players have started off this season as the ones to watch for 2017-18?

Romelu Lukaku

Let’s kick off with an obvious one. The ex-Everton man has taken no time settling in at Manchester United, scoring five times in his first games. The big Belgian was helped by being close friends with a number of United players and having plenty of Premier League experience, and I’m expecting him to continue scoring for fun all season.

Mohamed Salah

Another pretty easy nomination is Salah. The ex-Chelsea man was being laughed at as a Blues flop but seems to have come back to the league with something to prove and has so far been one of Liverpool’s best players. The Egyptian has not only been scoring goals, he has added a new dimension to Liverpool’s set-up with his overall performances.

Gabriel Jesus

This list could be stacked with Man City players but the Brazilian has to come first. He has looked effortlessly brilliant since arriving in England and he’s one of a kind given that City has had several Brazil flops in the past (Robinho, Elano etc).

The youngster has become a regular starter alongside Sergio Aguero and is keeping the likes of Leroy Sane out of the starting 11.

Aaron Mooy

The 27-year-old Australian has been the stand-out performer for league newcomers Huddersfield Town. The attacking midfielder from Man City has been crucial to his side’s positive start and looks like being the decisive factor in whether the Yorkshire side does well this season.

Cesar Azpilicueta

There isn’t a better, more consistent and more dynamic defender in the league than the Chelsea centre-back/ full-back. He was instrumental in the club’s triumph last season and has begun this campaign in the same comfortable, controlled manner. I expect him to be in the team of the season at the end of the year.

Sead Kolasinac

Although Arsenal has been woeful at times, their Bosnian import has made an instant impact. You have to appreciate the beastly left wing-back.

His powerful runs forward and obvious appetite for winning have given the Gunners some of the steel that they have lacked for a number of years.

Matt Ritchie

Ritchie had a strong spell in the Premier League before making a bizarre move down to the Championship to join Newcastle. The Magpies started the season poorly but a couple of wins on the bounce inspired by Ritchie’s brilliance have brought the Toon army back to life. The ex-Bournemouth man’s left foot has troubled all opponents and he’s a solid, cheap pick for your fantasy league teams.

Sergio Aguero

He’s always on this type of list, you just can’t ignore him. The Argentine was written off by many fans before the season but his early performances suggest he’ll challenge for the golden boot again this season.

A majestic hat-trick against Watford stamped his authority as City’s main man and he hasn’t lost his explosive pace so he’s got plenty more goals to come.

Javier Hernandez

Sometimes when your team isn’t playing particularly well you have to search for the most positive thing available and that is what Chicharito has been for West Ham. The Mexican international has impressed with his movement off the ball and has helped to create more than 30% of West Ham’s chances so far this season.

Alvaro Morata

It’s not easy coming from Spain to England and being labeled Chelsea’s second or third-choice signing but Morata has had no problems.

The Spanish striker has filled the big boots of Diego Costa and has done a job for the Blues so far. Surprisingly known more for his overall play than for his goals, he has squeezed into our top 10 of the early season.
