Manchester United has dominated the Premier League for the best part of 20 years, mainly down to the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge. Since the Scotsman stepped down as manager the Red Devils have struggled to find their feet with poor signings and failed managers contributing to an unsuccessful transition phase by the club’s high standards.
However the arrival of Jose Mourinho seems to be edging United back to becoming the elite team in England. Here are three reasons why they could ambush the front-runners Manchester City and win the title this season.
Jose Mourinho
Mourinho is the type of manager who can galvanise a group of under-performing players and turn them into over-achievers. He is known for his ability to force players to do things they don’t normally do.
Eden Hazard, for instance, was known for his lazy style of play but the Portuguese manager convinced him to track back and help retrieve the ball for his team. The ex-Madrid boss has a terrific habit of winning titles in his second season, accomplishing that at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
It’s now his second season at United, he has spent a ton of money on players and looks to have a squad that is ready to compete. It seems like the stars have aligned for Jose and Co.
Nemanja Matic
It is hard to believe that when he was running Chelsea Mourinho sold Matic because he felt he didn’t have the legs to challenge the best players in the world, only to bring him back to Stamford Bridge during his second spell as manager. He’s now signed him yet again, however this time as United boss.
It may seem silly to suggest that one player can push the club to a title challenge but what Matic provides to the team will make a profound difference. It is well known that Paul Pogba likes to play further forward and with the Serbian now occupying the space behind him, we should start to see the best of the Frenchman.
Matic will also allow United’s wide men to play freely, and we have already seen that have a huge impact on Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s performances.
City has another priority
United’s strongest rival for the title will be Manchester City due to the phenomenal round of signings that The Sky Blues made over summer.
However City’s owners have confessed that winning the Champions League is a much bigger priority for them than challenging for the Premier League title. Pep Guardiola (left) would obviously like to win both but it doesn’t seem viable for a club that has only once before reached the Champions League semi-finals to go two steps further against Europe’s best while also focusing enough on the domestic league to win that title as well.
The round of 16 and group stages have been common exit points for City and the determination to go much further in this campaign should pave the way for United to have a clean path to the Premier League title. Unless there is an unlikely challenge from Arsenal or Chelsea surprises everyone by overcoming its poor signings and somehow defending the title, then Mourinho’s men should stroll to a 14th Premier League title.
