Football: Who will be the Season’s Top Five Midfielders?

The Premier League boasts some of the best midfielders in the world with most of them starring for the top six clubs in the league. Last season certainly saw a number of dazzling midfield performances but who will dominate during the 2017-18 campaign?

Paul Pogba

Pogba was a bit like Marmite last season with Manchester United fans adoring him but most other league fans slating him for his attitude and dance moves, not to mention his lack of final ball quality and his huge price tag. You have to excuse the Frenchman for some of his performances, as it was only his first campaign in England.

However the ex-Juventus star is now expected to shine in the coming season with the support of Jose Mourinho and good friend and new signing Romelu Lukaku. The France international has shown what he is capable of during his time in Italy and while playing for his country so expect fireworks on and off the pitch from the dab-king.

Leroy Sane

Sane will be one of two Manchester City players to make this list and that’s simply down to the number of world-class midfielders it has put together. The German international had a slow start in the Premier League but gradually found his way into the first team and now looks irreplaceable.

The speedy wide man has an electrifying turn of pace that similar to the speed of teammate Raheem Sterling but Sane also has a lethal end product that will make him one of City’s key men in a hugely important season for boss Pep Guardiola.

Bernardo Silva

In every list of predictions there’s always one player who causes a debate and I can imagine Silva is the one for this piece. The new City signing is exactly the type of player Guardiola adores – quick, agile and most importantly, deadly in the final third. The ex-Monaco man prides himself on his delivery into dangerous areas and his ability to kill teams with one pass.

He is similar in many ways to the ageing Spaniard David Silva, who may need someone to replace him as the Sky Blues’ pass-maestro in the coming season and the Portuguese international could be the perfect man.

Although he may not look like he can slot straight into City’s first team one would suspect that Guardiola will find a way to squeeze him in over time. He may not be the star man right from the start of the season but a gradual increase in game time should resolve that minor issue.

Tiemoue Bakayoko

Bakayoko could turn out to be the best midfield signing of the summer by any Premier League club. The giant central midfielder will compliment N’Golo Kante perfectly with his robust style of play and his intelligence on the ball, which is something Kante lacks.

Bakayoko is arguably one of the most stylish holding midfielders in the world, a show-pony in his own way and a great character to have in a dressing room. The France international could provide Chelsea with the power it needs to retain the title.

Emre Can

The German international surprised everyone with his terrific end-of-season performances to help push Liverpool into the Champions League places.

Although he has stiff competition in terms of teammates who play in similar positions, the ex-Bayern Munich man will be hoping to live up to the hype this season. If he manages to consistently play as well as he did during the end of the last campaign, I expect him to become a regular in a side full of top quality midfielders.
