Football: Three Big Deals That Will Happen

It’s the one day in the season when every football fan keeps checking the television for news or spends the whole day with one eye on Twitter. August 31 is deadline day for transfer deals. In recent years the deals on deadline day have been less than spectacular but I’ve got a strong feeling that this year there will be some high profile transfers taking place at the last gasp.

One in, one out at Anfield

dealsLiverpool has been battling with Southampton throughout the transfer window for centre-back Virgil Van Dijk (left) and the Dutchman’s decision to hand in a transfer request has opened the door for a move.

Although the Saints are desperate to hold onto their man, Jurgen Klopp’s search elsewhere for a defender has clearly run dry. The German manager seems to be waiting for Mamadou Sakho to leave the club before making any official moves. Van Dijk’s deal will run right to the last moment before the Reds clinch the deal they have been chasing.

Sadly for Liverpool fans VVD’s arrival on deadline day will be little more than a ploy to soften the blow of Philippe Coutinho heading to Barcelona.

The big move Madrid needs

dealsReal Madrid has been on the hunt for Kylian Mbappe since the window opened but Monaco has clung to their French star while accepting deals to allow a number of other players to leave.

That could be down to Madrid waiting for someone to come along and sign Gareth Bale or the fact that the Galacticos always like to cause an uproar and generate hype around any player arriving. Neymar’s move to PSG shocked the world and given that Madrid are the divas of football, the Spanish heavyweights are probably hoping to match that move in some way.

A deadline day £150m transfer of the 18-year-old striker would probably compete with the headlines generated by PSG and Barcelona, giving Los Blancos the bragging rights they’re constantly searching for.

Spurs shocker

dealsIt is extremely likely that Gareth Bale will leave Madrid to fund the Mbappe deal and if that does happen there is only one place he would go. Even if Manchester United revived its hopes of buying Bale, financial fair play rules mean the Red Devils wouldn’t be able to spend the £125m to £150m required to sign the Welshman.

That opens the door for a sensational return to Spurs. The Wales captain has publicly stated that at some point in his career he would love to go back to where he became a star, and with Mauricio Pochettino struggling to make a decent signing, there is every chance of a return for Bale. The Lilywhites boss has mentioned cryptically that he is closely eyeing up a big money deal and when you take into account Madrid’s love for hogging the transfer headlines it’s almost a deal waiting to happen.

It would be Bale back to the Spurs, Madrid buying the most expensive teenager in history, and Madrid once again hogging the world’s attention. And all on transfer deadline day.
