Football: Who’s Buying Ousmane Dembele?

After an astonishing season at Borussia Dortmund in which he became the standout player in a star-studded line-up, Ousmane Dembele is now the most sought-after youngster in football. The fact that he received interest from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester United before signing for BVB was a huge hint that the youngster would turn out to be a star but none of those top clubs wanted to take a punt on the midfielder. A year later and all of the same names are in the hat again trying to secure a deal for him. What has been behind the 20 year old’s rise to footballing stardom?

Style of play

dembeleDembele is similar in many ways to the greats of the game such as Lionel Messi but I would argue that his technical ability on both feet means he surpasses the Argentinian to some extent. That statement might leave you screaming at your screen but let me explain. Messi has never been known to be two-footed, nor has he ever taken a corner with his right foot or a penalty. Even Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t that confident about his weak-foot ability but Dembele has done all of the above.

Being two-footed doesn’t mean you’re a great footballer but being able to use both feet in every area of the pitch including scoring goals soon becomes a feature of your game that any fan can appreciate. The young man still has a lot to prove before we can actually compare him to either Messi or Ronaldo but his playing style is a blend of CR7 and Leo.

The Frenchman has the direct, scary and dangerous speed of Cristiano along with dazzling feet to bamboozle the best defenders in the world with ease. He also possesses the calm and classy style of Messi – you’ll often find him side-stepping around defenders before unleashing a finishing blow, a winger who finishes like a striker.

He has one other trait that belongs to very few players – he can stop and start at full speed whenever he wants. This is not just the turn of pace that many players have, it is more a case of if you blink he’s gone with a dip of the shoulder or a no-look turn.

Dembele finds himself in a heap on the floor pretty often but he seems to get a kick from it and that’s another way you can tell that he’s going to be one of the world’s best.

Who is signing him

Manchester City have expressed interest, same with Liverpool. He’s French so Arsenal would love him but he’s way too expensive now they’ve stumped for Lacazette. Barcelona is edging closer to signing Dembele despite 80% of the clubs in the Champions League stating they’d like to have him. Real is a maybe.. Although many of them could have snapped him up for less than £15m a year ago, Barca will have to conjure up at least £75m to secure the deal.

Fun Fact

Dembele recently said in an interview that he doesn’t know whether he is left-footed or right-footed. Despite producing more passes, crosses and tackles with his left foot, the youngster has scored and assisted more goals with his right and also takes penalties with his “un-favoured” right peg.
