Football: What to Expect from ManU this Season

Jose Mourinho is a manager who is well known for his second season brilliance and after last season’s treble, Manchester United is looking to build a team that can challenge for the title. He seems to know how to win titles in his second year but Mourinho’s successes are often built in the trading window and although United has missed out on a number of its targets, there is still time for the Portuguese boss to build the perfect team. Let’s take a look at how the Red Devils will shape up next season.

Unfortunately for Jose, his current squad consists of a lot of players who could be special or might have a good season, a conditional status that the ex-Chelsea manager does not really respect.

In all of his previous jobs he has scrapped the youth policy and bought in players who he knew would get the job done or players who were already world-class.

The opportunities for players like Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard will be extremely limited this season due to the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, and I believe Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return in October as well. Wayne Rooney’s exit means United needs a new number 10, which should push Paul Pogba into playing in a more advanced role.

That leaves a big gap in the holding midfield position and with Marco Verratti now on the market and Mino Raiola his agent, there is a very strong chance he will be on his way to Old Trafford to play alongside fan-favourite Ander Herrera.

The United faithful are going to be treated to some exciting football next season with the amount of attacking flair available to Mourinho. Although he has Anthony Martial and Juan Mata, I expect Ivan Perisic to swap Milan for Manchester and finish off the perfect frontline for the Reds. United has several attackers with speed but very few who make intelligent runs and are willing to do so for a full 90 minutes, so Perisic is that missing player they need.

I might be forgetting the key piece to Jose’s squad, the defence. It’s common knowledge that Mourinho loves to work on a defensive set-up in big games so he needs some cavalry at the back. He seems to dislike Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones so I expect all three to leave and be replaced by Eric Dier, who will be used as the utility man. Dier can play anywhere across the back four or in midfield, making him the exact type of player Mourinho likes. With almost the perfect team in place for United to push for a title challenge, Nemanja Matic will be the final signing.

Mourinho adores Matic, and having sold him and then re-signed him at Chelsea I think he will now sign him for a second time as United boss in an attempt to bore out more games with the aggressive holding midfielder adding to the defensive strategy.

How ManU could line up:

De Gea

Dier  Bailly  Lindelof

Valencia  Verratti  Herrera  Rojo

Pogba     Mata

Lukaku
