Football: What to Expect from Liverpool this Season

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has been the slow mover this transfer window with only three signings so far this summer despite a cluster of rumours suggesting there is a revamp around the corner. Rumours are often based in truth and I think there could be a new-look Liverpool in store for us next season. Here’s what could happen if The Reds manage to snap up its remaining targets.

Before the Merseyside club starts to dream about who it is going to sign, there is some cash to be made from players still at the club. Mamadou Sakho looks out of favour and unlikely to play a game this season following his celebrations with Christian Benteke last season and his fall-out with Klopp. Although he would cost Crystal Palace close to £30m, it could be a good deal for both parties and Liverpool could make a similar amount from the sales of Lazar Markovic and Kevin Stewart.

Exits aside, The Reds need to look for replacements at the back and with Andrew Robertson signing from Hull City, he seems the perfect man to take over from James Milner at left-back.

Not only has that now allowed Milner to become the utility man in the middle (since Lucas Leiva’s exit) but it also means Klopp has the speedy young full-back he has needed for his system to work as he wants.

Another signing that would add the perfect steel to a weak defence is Virgil Van Dijk. Signing him would require Liverpool to break its transfer record but the Dutchman is easily in the top five defenders in the league, so his fee is justified.

With the defence sorted, an area of the pitch where Liverpool has had too many average players is in the middle but this year’s squad looks very well equipped in the central areas. Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner and Marko Grujic are going to be battling it out for the three midfield roles. That won’t be all as Naby Keita’s potential move from RB Leipzig would add the world-class quality required in that role. None of the six players named above possess the engine or unselfishness that Keita could provide to a midfield desperate for an N’Golo Kante-esque player.

The defence and midfield look perfect at this moment in time but the Anfield club has struggled to replace Luis Suarez, which coincided with the downfall of Daniel Sturridge. Some fans believe Roberto Firmino can do the job as the main man but as every title-winning manager has said, goals win you trophies. Unfortunately for Firmino he suffers in any comparison with the strikers of the other top clubs. Borussia Dortmund’s want-away striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the exact player Klopp wants.

The £63m forward would be the final player needed to make Liverpool real title contenders. His runs off the ball and immense speed are exactly what the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane need in front of them to make Klopp’s team serious challengers.

How Liverpool could line up:

Mignolet

Clyne  Matip  Van Dijk  Robertson

Can   Keita  Coutinho

Mane   Aubameyang  Salah
