Football: So Which Team Will Buy Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe has gone from unknown to the most valued player in the world of football with a fee on his head of up to £150m. He comes from a family of athletes as his father is a coach and his mother a professional handball player but the young France star had no coverage or hype around him until the middle of last season, so he pretty much came out of nowhere.

Having impressed in Monaco’s second team he was given a chance at the age of 17 to play first team football this season and within a year he has become a household name. It’s time to take a look at what sets Mbappe apart from the other teenage stars.

Style of play

mbappeMbappe has something unique about him that Arsene Wenger once saw in Thierry Henry. A lot of young players possess speed and power as it has become the norm for most athletes to have both of those attributes but the 18-year-old has a direct approach that only a handful of young players have.

Like Henry during his time at Arsenal, Mbappe has the presence of mind to shift the ball one way then the other before unleashing an unstoppable strike. Doing that in a calm and cool way is what makes this kid so different from the pack. Marcus Rashford, for instance,  has a much more erratic approach than Mbappe, who always looks in control. Mbappe also has a personality to match that of his fellow Frenchman, Henry.

There is a quiet arrogance in the way he picks the ball up and goes past opposition players with ease while they desperately launch themselves at him. It is not only delightful to watch but also brings back memories of Henry, one of the greatest strikers to have played the game.

It is rare to come across a player with such strong similarities to a retired champion. People have often compared Bojan to Lionel Messi but that similarity went only so far. When you look closely at Henry and Mbappe it is easy to see why they are so often put in the same bracket.

The main difference about the Monaco striker is that he is extremely versatile having played in all three attacking positions of a 4-3-3 formation. He has displayed great maturity in being able to move around the pitch and dominate defenders while still playing in his own style.

Who is signing him?

He is easily one of the most in-demand names in football but with a price tag of well over £100m there are only a select number of clubs that could actually afford him. Manchester United, Real Madrid, PSG and Barcelona are the four top clubs that are interested and the four most likely to be able to stump up the cash. Whatever happens, this young man is likely to dominate any league he chooses to play in.

Fun Fact

Mbappe still lives at Monaco’s training complex in an attempt, in his own words, to stay grounded and stop fame getting to his head.
