Gylfi Sigurdsson is arguably one of the most underrated players in the Premier League at this moment in time. Although his club Swansea City has just demanded £50m for him, the footballing world seems to think that’s a laughable amount. However, the Iceland captain’s statistics would back his price tag. As he has scored 27 times in 106 games for Swansea and picked up 33 assists, the Welsh club could argue that it is well within its rights to demand “crazy” money. Let’s take a look at why football fans shouldn’t be surprised by his estimated value.
Style of play
The Icelandic international is a two-footed maestro, in other words his left foot is just as strong as his right and he can pass, cross and shoot with either foot. Unlike most central attacking midfielders in the 20th Century, Sigurdsson isn’t known for his turn of pace or his ability to dribble past a defender. In truth, you won’t see him do that at all. The 27-year-old is better known for his composure in and around the penalty area, and for being a set-piece specialist.
There are very few players in the Premier League who can pick the ball up 40 yards from goal and cause as much devastation with as few touches as the 6’1” midfielder. The Swansea talisman has often played well with a striker who can link the play up, meaning he can play off the front man allowing more one-twos and smarter phases of play. He has also proven that he can be the overall main man for his team having contributed to 29% of the team’s goals last season. Statistically he outshines £60m-rated Philippe Coutinho with more goals, assists, chances created and dangerous passes played over the last two seasons.
The only differences are the clubs the two men play for and their nationalities. Being Brazilian clearly adds value to your price tag. Aside from that, the minor issue hanging over Sigurdsson is that he struggled during his two-year spell at Spurs from 2012 to 2014. The question that arises is whether he can be the main man for a bigger team or whether he is suited to being the dominant force in a smaller club.
However I would argue that he was unlucky during his stay at White Hart Lane due to a number of injuries and he was also competing with Christen Eriksen, who is one of Mauricio Pochettino’s favourite players.
Where should he go?
Sigurdsson has one thing to prove, which is that he is good enough to play for any club rather than just the smaller clubs. With Everton very keen and clubs such as West Ham United interested in signing him he will have a tough choice but I believe the best way to prove his critics wrong and enhance his reputation would be to shift to Merseyside.
