Football: How Rooney Will Fit Into Everton?

Wayne Rooney has completed his dream return to Everton, where he began his career and became the youngest Premier League goal scorer with his unforgettable strike against Arsenal. Since then he’s gone on to win five Premier League titles and 11 other trophies with Manchester United while becoming that club’s all-time top scorer.

What He Brings to Everton?

rooneyHowever his performance has drastically deteriorated in the last two seasons with many believing he is a long way past his best. On paper, he certainly seems to have struggled as he has scored just 13 times in his last 53 Premier League games. Let’s take a look at whether Everton have made a wild choice or a good one.The first thing to remember is that Rooney has big boots to fill.

Romelu Lukaku has been Everton’s top scorer in the last two seasons and arguably he’s been the best player in the team. In the same period, Rooney went from being the first name on United’s team sheet to a player who is struggling to earn a spot on the bench. In Lukaku, the Merseyside club had a powerful, quick and young athlete it could rely on, someone who is not just constantly making runs but also capable of holding the ball up to create chances. Rooney is quite the opposite. He would once have been the perfect replacement but he’s fairly slow nowadays, nowhere near as powerful as the big Belgian and perhaps less hungry to succeed due to his age and the fact that he has already achieved so much in the game.

Although it remains to be seen whether he will be Everton’s main striker, you would assume that receiving the number 10 shirt means he will play an integral part this season. The big plus from having someone like Rooney in the squad is the winning mentality he will bring to the dressing room along with the moments of brilliance that he has provided in big games every year. The England striker has more trophies than the rest of the Everton team combined and his knack for producing in big games will be desperately needed given that Ronald Koeman’s men took just seven points from their 10 games against the top five last season.

The Toffees have been linked to other strikers despite Rooney’s arrival so the assumption would be that Everton aren’t looking to replace Lukaku with Rooney. If the Merseysiders manage to bring another quality striker in the squad, that would allow the ex-England captain to play in a second striker role, which is a position you could see working for the team.

Good Signing?

Despite all the talk about an emotional return to Everton, I think Rooney’s decision was based on the fact that he wouldn’t get much game time anywhere else so moving back to his first club was his best option. He won’t be expected to do what Lukaku has done for the team but if Koeman doesn’t manage to bring in a younger and faster striker to play alongside the ex-United man then Everton will struggle to score goals and ultimately will pay the price.

However it is rumoured that it was a free deal and that Rooney has taken a huge pay cut so for that reason alone, I think it’s a not such a bad signing.
