5 Ways to Make Extra Money in London

London is a notoriously expensive city. Between monthly rent, transport, food and social activities, it is easy to feel a little strapped for cash by the time the month is out. Here are our top tips for making extra pocket money in the capital.

1. Dog-sitting

Whether you’re thinking of getting a dog or simply love these adorable animals, dog-sitting is the perfect opportunity to spend some time with a new buddy while making a bit of extra cash.

All you need to do is take care of an endearing little doggy, take pictures for its owner, and make sure it’s OK! There’s even a 24/7 free vet care line in case of an emergency and the whole thing is covered by insurance. Dog-sitting has never been easier and the best part is that you can make up to £1,500 a month.

2. Become an Airbnb check-in agent

If you have some free time to get out of your home or office you could try being an airbnb check-in agent. Even if you can’t rent out your own room this is a way to capitalise on the growing Airbnb trend. All you need to do is get in touch with one of the many firms now offering services to Airbnb hosts. Your job will be to go to the property to greet the guests and give them the keys. A few days later you go back and do the same process for check-out. You earn £25 a pop, and you can easily make up to £300 a week. Become a check-in agent with Hostmaker or Guesty.

3. Be a Field Agent

Field Agent is an app that allows you to perform random tasks in exchange for a fee. For example, a task might be to check chocolate bar prices at Sainsbury’s.

Compensation can be as much as £7.50 per task. It’s not a lot but if you work from home or in an office where you can take a minute to pop out to the shop, you may quickly start making an extra £100 a month. The only disadvantage is that there aren’t many tasks to complete, and you must be able to act quickly.

Once you accept a task you have two hours to complete it, and all you need to do to claim your reward is send a picture of the specific product on the app.

4. Sell your data with People.io

One of the easiest ways to make money is to exchange your data for vouchers through people.io. You provide the data through questionnaires with 10 to 20 questions. Each gives you points, and the more you do, the more points you will earn. You can also “match” with different companies that give you extra points for watching their ads, and you can get an extra 500 points (!) for linking your Gmail account. Be warned, the gains are slow, and the concept slightly creepy but the £10 Amazon voucher or £5 Starbucks gift card are certainly attainable.

5. Refer, refer, refer!

Most people have no idea how lucrative the business of referrals has become. It applies to almost anything and you can make or save a lot of money simply by convincing your own network to start using a new service.

You only receive a mediocre £2.50 from Uber now but did you know that the grocery delivery service Ocado also offers rewards? You can get up to 20  “25% off” vouchers by referring friends.

With TransferWise, you will get £50 for every 3 friends who use the service. On Airbnb, you can receive a credit of up to £55 for each friend you refer, while they receive a £30 coupon. One thing is certain, if you’ve got friends who still don’t know about these services, convince them to get started with your voucher code!
