Bags, bags, bags… It’s a known fact that girls love bags for more than just fashion purposes. A good bag is so practical that it’s a mystery why more men don’t carry them.
The preferred bag silhouette of this Spring/Summer focuses on very structured shapes with practical utility features. Straps are more functional than ever and brands are tapping into the value of combining accessibility and necessity with fashion. So ladies, get ready to be both stylish and sensible with the top bags of this coming season.
The Box Bag
I am a huge fan of a boxy-shaped bag. I find that my belongings are easier to find because they don’t move all over the place as there is more structure to hold everything in place. This silhouette is very fashion-forward and is worn by all the stylists and seen on all the street-style blogs. But don’t mistake a boxy bag for a satchel – this is an updated version of a satchel shape but with more defined, clean-cut features that are reminiscent of early 1900’s vanity cases.
Although a classic shape, this bag is versatile from daytime to evening. Manu Atelier have beautifully simple cross-body box bags at a low-end luxury price (approx. £280). Building Block is a more contemporary brand that isn’t very well known [yet] but has incredibly versatile bags with interesting boxy shapes. H&M has box bags starting at £29.99 that are perfect for a summer night out. Zara has more affordable cross-body bags. My favourite is the wicker woven box bag for £49.99. For smaller boxy bags,
Zara has prices starting at £29.99. H&M’s sister label &Other Stories has a decent selection of boxy cross-body bags at a High Street price and in neutral colours for more day-time wear.
The Circle Bag
To push your fashion cred even further, opt for a round profile. Unfortunately these bags come at a premium as High Street brands haven’t caught onto this shape just yet. That means you have to splash a bit more for this extra special bag.
The cheapest circular bag is from Cos and is very elegant and streamlined in a versatile black leather for £79. Sandro and Carven also have bags at a premium £200. For a more summer feel, woven wicker round bags give off the tropical vibe while we pretend that it’s warm in the UK.
Waiwai has beautiful wicker circle bags but at more than a premium price and coming all the way from Brazil. For a moderate top
remium price, look at Mansur Gavriel and Diane von Furstenberg, which have a perfect mix of contemporary simplicity.
The Utility Bag
This bag is for the practical fashion warrior. Its unisex shape allows for sensible everyday wear and performance fabrics are mixed with soft leathers with multiple compartments. With its versatile straps, this utility pack can be worn on the waist as well as around the body. Marni, Acne Studios and Want Les Essentiels take the lead for the luxury sector.
For something more affordable, &Other Stories has a beautiful feminine utility bag that is more chic than unisex. For £79 you can snap up this dusty pink utility bag that has compartments for an easily accessible pen, wallet and oyster card, and a larger main pouch for other goodies. It’s so beautiful and practical that I’m thinking of snatching it up for myself. For something more casual, look at Adidas and ASOS. Urban Outfitters also does a bum bag for £20 in versatile colours (black, white, lilac).
H&M has a fanny pack for £12.99 (although they call it a waist bag on their website). I’ve also seen a lot of utility-shaped bags in retro and vintage shops such as Beyond Retro in Dalston and Mint in Stoke Newington.
