Football: Who Wants to Buy Aubameyang?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has fast become one of the most in-demand strikers in the world since his arrival at Borussia Dortmund in 2013. The French-born Gabonese international has wracked up an astonishing record of one goal every 1.7 games during his Bundesliga spell, which has put him at the top of most managers’ lists of transfer targets.

Dortmund’s ability to scout players and turn them into world-beaters is being heavily praised but the club’s lack of ambition has left them no choice but to let go of their big players such as Mario Gotze (who has since returned) and Robert Lewandowski, and it seems it will be no different for Aubameyang this summer as he is heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.

Where next?

AubameyangEvery top Premier League club apart from Manchester City is on a desperate hunt to find a new striker. Chelsea has asked Diego Costa to leave, Manchester United released Zlatan Ibrahimovic and both Arsenal and Liverpool have needed world-class strikers for some time. Let’s start with Liverpool, which has struggled to replace Luis Suarez who was the driving force in pushing an average team close to a title challenge.

Since then The Reds have tried several alternatives and have miserably failed. While Roberto Firmino did have a promising season playing in the number nine position, it is blatantly obvious that Anfield is still searching for a natural finisher.

Aubameyang has previously worked with Jurgen Klopp and it has been well documented that they are still close and have a strong relationship. However given that Liverpool has just spent close to £40m on Mohamed Salah, I believe it is unlikely that the club will be able to stump up the required £63m to sign the Dortmund striker. The Gabon captain has been known to make his transfer choices based on how well he slots into a team and aside from Liverpool, his next best option may be Arsenal in terms of style of play.

If Alexis Sanchez does end up leaving the Emirates I expect Arsene Wenger to make a move for Aubameyang. His deadly speed and knack for finding the back of the net is exactly what the Gunners need to become title contenders again.

What can we expect?

I think it will be a battle between Liverpool and Arsenal. Both clubs have been known to hunt for cheaper deals but this won’t be one that fits the regular criteria for either of these clubs. If Wenger and Klopp are in a battle to sign Aubameyang I expect him to choose the Liverpool manager due to the exceptional success of his last spell under Klopp at Dortmund. Unfortunately for the two Premier League clubs, they will have to wait on the decisions of Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe first.

Where those two end up is likely to have an impact on any move Aubameyang makes, as Lewandowski leaving Bayern Munich could lead to the German champions making an approach for Dortmund’s talisman, and if Mbappe decides that Arsenal is his next home then that may leave the door wide open for Liverpool to sign Aubameyang.
