Football: Is Ronaldo Really Coming Back To United?

Cristiano Ronaldo has started crying wolf again, leaving Manchester United fans dreaming of the biggest transfer move in the history of the game. Having broken almost every record there is while playing in Spain, the forward who was once the heartbeat of the Manchester club has once again been linked back to his old club. At the age of 32, he has won the La Liga title twice, the UEFA Champions League three times and a major tournament with Portugal.  In the next 396 words I’m going to explain why a return to Old Trafford is happening.

ronaldoThe first key factor in the Ronaldo rumour is the Madrid fans. Having led his side (as the top scorer) to its first La Liga title in four years, he found himself on the end of jeers following a run of no goals in five league games.

Yes, those performances were less than impressive but you probably won’t find United fans turning on him as easily as the Spanish crowd. Not only did the crowd give him a hard time, local newspapers wrote about the Portuguese international as if he was one of the overpriced flops who Madrid has often been guilty of signing.

The comments included the claim that “he has let the pressure get to his head”, which is somewhat baffling considering he has been the top scorer in every season but one since he signed for the Galacticos.

The main reason CR7 wants to come back to the Premier League is his tax evasion problems with the Spanish Government. If you think back to when Lionel Messi was accused of something similar, he was immediately linked to a move away from Barcelona.

Although everybody knew it would never happen, it still sparked an interest from England. I believe Ronaldo is trying something similar by putting pressure on the Madrid board in the hope that the club will somehow resolve his tax evasion problems.

If Messi can get away with it, why can’t Ronaldo? The claim is that a move to England would raise some legal technicalities that would make it easier for him to escape punishment.

The final reason to believe that he is on the move is that the Portugal captain clearly does want a move and the only club that could afford his humongous wage package and extortionate transfer fee is Manchester United. Aside from fees, Ronaldo has one thing over Messi in every debate – he has done it in the Premier League. I’m sure Portugal’s all-time top scorer would be keen to prove he can do it all again. Having worked under Jose Mourinho before, he would have no problems changing managers despite his strong relationship with Zinedine Zidane.

It is simple. As long as Manchester United is willing to stump up the rumoured asking price of around £250m and the weekly wages of at least £200,000 then Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford is pretty much a done deal.
