Football: Gareth Bale Back To Spurs?

Gareth Bale is clearly one of the world’s most naturally gifted footballers but his somewhat slow season has once again left him in a position of doubt at Real Madrid. Having played just 1,425 minutes in La Liga this campaign, it has been a short campaign for the Welsh international. However this is Bale we’re talking about, a three-time Champions League winner and an £85m man.

Despite potential doubts creeping in around his fitness, the fact remains that when he is in good shape he delivers results that make him one of the world’s best players. Rumours in Madrid are suggesting that a move back to the Premier League may work out best for the winger, whose relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo has not always been great.

Where next?

baleEvery time Bale is linked with a move away from the Spanish capital Manchester United is the first team mentioned and this June has been no different. And for the first time since the ex-Tottenham talisman moved to Spain, a transfer to Manchester does actually seem possible.

Having missed out on Antoine Griezmann and Romelu Lukaku, United’s search for a marquee signing seems to have hit a brick wall and with few realistic options left, Bale could be the last resort. United lack a natural winger capable of doing damage to top opponents so the Wales wide-man would fit into Jose Mourinho’s first team with ease.

Bale is widely considered to be extremely loyal to Spurs and with Pochettino building a team that can compete for a PL title, a transfer back to North London and familiar territory might make more sense than attempting to become the talisman of a United team that is going through a transitional phase. The question then becomes whether Spurs can afford his monumental wages and his huge price tag. Tottenham has plenty of financial pressure already given that its best players are significantly underpaid by market standards, bringing rivals with deep pockets sniffing around the Spurs.

Tottenham sold Bale for £85m in 2013 and some would argue that he has improved since then, With Paul Pogba’s record fee of £90m in mind, you would assume that he would now cost more than £100m.

What can we expect?

I think Bale should resist any temptation to move back to the PL. Real Madrid is dominating in Spain and the fact that Barcelona is going through the awkward process of changing managers has given the Galacticos a chance to win more trophies. Bale should want to be a part of that. As former footballers often say, winning the UCL is the pinnacle of the game and it seems unlikely that any PL side will be winning one any time soon unless there is some one-off freak performance.

Rumours are building that Eden Hazard will move to Madrid in the next couple of seasons, so Bale should be getting ready to pack his bags at some point. For now though, I expect him to stay in Spain with a future return to Spurs of the north London club can maintain its recent progress and fend off raids on its current stars.
