Football: Finally I’m the New Manager of Liverpool

Every football fan dreams of managing a Premier League club at some point in their life, even if it’s just on the FIFA video game so I’m about to take on the challenge of replacing Jurgen Klopp in the hot seat at Anfield as manager for the next 578 words.

Where Do I Start?

It’s transfer season so some players have to come and others have to go. I’d start by getting rid of the following and I’ll explain why.

Out: Daniel Sturridge, Mamadou Sakho, Alberto Moreno, Kevin Stewart and Ragner Klavan.

managerSome of those names will surprise few fans who watch football, such as Moreno who has been a huge flop since his £18m arrival from Sevilla. The same applies to Stewart, who has hardly featured in the first team, and Sakho whose attitude would have no chance in my dressing room! Many would argue against letting Sturridge go, although I firmly believe the Merseyside club has seen the best of the England striker, who hasn’t played more than four games on the trot since 2013-14. Remember i’m the manager.

That leaves us with Klavan who is arguably the most timid defender in the PL and I like my back line to be aggressive. I might sound like a harsh manager right now but my Liverpool team won’t be pushed over by the likes of Crystal Palace or Burnley.

With five exits, I’ll need to make some signings. I’d start by identifying a world-class striker (Alexandre Lacazette) and a top centre-back (Virgil Van Dijk). The problem at Anfield has been that the club pretends to bid for a top player and then ends up buying his Aston Villa level equivalent. Liverpool has the money to sign them – £60m for Lacazette and £70m for Van Dijk – if it is willing to spend it. If you look at Manchester United, it managed to spend £80m on Paul Pogba despite not having Champions League football last season.

The Reds have to match that and my team has Champion League football to bargain with. The newspapers would be harassing the club for spending that £130m, so with the new-look attitude of not caring about bad press I would also try to snap up Mohamed Salah for £40m. Whether people like it or not, the only way to compete is by spending. Liverpool as a club has failed to do that for a long time and therefore has failed to challenge for titles.

My starting XI

Not too much has changed since Klopp’s exit as manager in terms of personnel but the team has more quality in areas where it has lacked world-class players for a long time. Despite the hate directed at him Simon Mignolet would remain my number one goalkeeper and most of the back four would stay the same apart from Dejan Lovren, who would be swapped out for Van Dijk.

This is the tricky part of the team but I would play 4-3-3 with Emre Can in the middle of my midfield three, with Gini Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana either side of him. The line-up would be capped off by a front three of Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane playing off Lacazette.

That team would do serious damage. Free-flowing, quick and aggressive in forward areas with options to rotate from the bench in Salah and Roberto Firmino. Liverpool would have an actual plan B if playing via Coutinho failed.

Where would we finish?

Third.
