Football: ManU Gets Ready to Spend

Manchester United has already managed once under Jose Mourinho to attract world-class talent without the lure of playing in the Champions League so it should be able to pull off the same trick this year. Win the Europa League and it just gets easier for the Special One.

We’ll take a look at who should be coming in and who should be heading out this summer if United want to stake a title chase.

Who ManU could sign

ManUJames Rodriguez is the first name that comes to mind when talking about potential arrivals at Old Trafford, and he will presumably be part of the De Gea deal.

The Colombian has struggled to fit in to the Madrid set-up but his ability to win a game on his own might be exactly what United needs with Ibrahimovic’s exit imminent.

A number of defenders will be counting their days at The Theatre of Dreams, which will allow Jose to acquire some new defensive cover. The Manchester club will go head to head with Liverpool for the signature of Michael Keane however I think Portugal defender Nelson Semedo will be the first of United’s arrivals due to his close connections with Mourinho.

The ex-Real coach has been a long-term admirer of Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Greizmann, often praising him after Madrid derbies. The French striker has recently voiced his frustrations at the lack of progress Atletico has made in the last few seasons.

It is estimated that he would cost United close to £100 million I believe that fee will be agreed before the window closes.

Who could be leaving?

manuI expect more departures than signings for the Red Devils this summer. ManU has carried some dead wood in its squad for a long while, and Mourinho isn’t a manager who needs a second invitation to sell players. Unfortunately for the Portuguese manager he looks set to lose a couple of players against his will. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury will rule him out until January 2018. Even younger players tend to struggle to return to the same level after injuries like Zlatan’s, and at 35 he will find it very difficult.

LA Galaxy is in hot pursuit and the Swede’s short-lived United career looks to be coming to an end. Wayne Rooney is another big name who is expected to depart Manchester this summer with a move to Everton or the MLS most likely. That will be a big disappointment for Mourinho as he has tried to sign Rooney several times in the past.

Along with Rooney and Ibrahimovic, I expect David De Gea to complete his long-awaited move to Real Madrid for a player plus cash deal for ManU which will leave Mourinho with a pot full of cash but the loss of two of his most senior players. I also think Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Marouane Fellaini and Luke Shaw will leave.

The Verdict

Exits: Jones, Blind, Rooney, Ibrahimovic, De Gea, Shaw and Fellaini.

Signings: Rodriguez, Semedo, Griezmann, Ivan Perisic and Marquinhos.
