Football: Managerial Predictions for Barca and Bayern

The Premier League now has some of the best managers that we have seen in recent times such as Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. Although there are a host of rumours surrounding other managers in the Premier League, I don’t expect too much movement in managerial positions in England but I can see some changes in Europe’s elite leagues.

Barcelona

bayernUnfortunately for Tottenham Hotspur fans, Barcelona is searching for a new manager with Luis Enrique stepping down and Pochettino seems to fit the bill. Barcelona has often appointed staff from within the club hierarchy but that hasn’t worked since Guardiola left the club. The Catalan giants will have earmarked the Spurs manager as a prime target as they look to improve their youth structure at a club that has been known for developing some of the world’s finest stars.

The Argentine manager currently has a squad stacked with young talent and seems to be nurturing them to perfection. Despite not winning a trophy in the last two seasons, Spurs have won more points than any other club over those two seasons and played the best football in the PL which is something Barcelona aims to do in La Liga.

The Camp Nou faithful have expressed their frustrations at Enrique’s style of play so they should have no problem with Pochettino’s more attack-minded tactics.

Bayern Munchen

bayernThe Bayern Munich job is an impossible battle. Pep Guardiola couldn’t quite reach the heights demanded by the board and couldn’t match the trophies won by Jupp Heynckes. Carlo Ancelotti has since taken over the throne and seems to have struggled. Despite his classy approach, Bayern has already lost more games this season than in the last five and an early Champions League exit did him no favours. Along with an ageing squad he has also found his side struggling to compete against teams hungrier than Bayern.

You can’t blame Ancelotti too much for that as most of the Bayern squad have won every trophy in Germany a number of times. It may be his last domestic job as he has already managed in England, Italy and Spain but Ancelotti will go down in the history books as one of the finest managers football has seen.

There has been a shortage of top managers in the last five years with several clubs recycling managers rather than taking risks with younger coaches. That has left the big clubs finding it difficult to sustain success, as players tend to lose their hunger over a period of time.

I expect it to be a quiet summer of managerial changes but I don’t think it will be long before the bigger clubs start offering the lesser-known managers a chance.

Hoffenheim

bayernHoffenheim has had a stunning season, having already scored more goals this campaign than in its last five, and Nagelsmann has quickly turned the blue and white army into one of the most liked clubs in Bundesliga.

A similar fan base and club ethos to Borussia Dortmund’s has made them increasingly popular throughout Europe and the 29-year-old manager’s fairytale story has given him some extra attention. If the rumours are true that Diego Simeone may become the next Bayern Munich manager then there is a strong chance the passionate German may move to Atletico Madrid.

A new stadium, a mixed bunch of talent and a hungry fan base would probably be the next step up for Nagelsmann.
