Excellent Food: London’s Healthiest Brunches

Forget breakfast, dinner and lunch. Brunch is the favourite meal in London town these days. Typically eaten between 11am and 3pm, brunch generally ranges from pancakes to bacon and eggs, unusual porridges, fancy toast and spreads.

Many of London’s brunches also feature unlimited Prosecco and mimosas as an add-on option which can be skipped when you don’t want the calories that come with the booze. For those days when your health goals are at the front of your mind we hunted down London’s healthiest brunches. Just remember that moderation is the key…

The Table Café, Southwark

brunchesOperating a walk-in only policy at weekends, The Table is worth the lengthy queue. A short walk from London Bridge station, this all-day breakfast café has a simple menu packed with lots of flavour. Who said healthy had to be tasteless? We love The Veggie Borough which is a brunch plate packed with organic fried eggs, grilled halloumi, buttered spinach, homemade veggie baked beans, grilled tomato, herby mushrooms and sourdough toast.

You had us at halloumi… Order this with the “Jump Start” smoothie (containing banana, strawberry, heather honey, nutmeg, and coconut water) and you’ll be ready for a post-brunch run. Their coffee is pretty great, ask for a Phar Lap.

The Breakfast Club, Spitalfields

brunchesNestled away on a side street just opposite Liverpool Street station, this branch of The Breakfast Club is home to a little secret*. It serves brunch treats all day and night so you do not have to visit in typical brunch hours to get your weekend fuel. The menu has a wide range of dishes but what we really love is the “All Day Club Classics. We don’t mean Tim Westwood’s greatest mixes but in particular the “Artichoke and Sun Blush Tomato Hash which packs taste and punch with the addition of hot pepper sauce. If you’re after something to satisfy your sweet tooth, the “Pancakes and Berries will sate your appetite but you may want to forgo the vanilla cream.

*If you tell the staff you’re here to visit the mayor, you will discover a new world via a walk-in fridge…

Duck and Waffle, Heron Tower

brunchesThis establishment is best saved for special occasions as the menu is on more on the pricey side but with views across the city it’s easy to understand why. Duck and Waffle is on our list of healthy London brunches as it offers a whole host of savoury options. We recommend the aptly named “Duck and Waffle, at £17, which combines ingredients you may not find in your own kitchen (crispy leg confit, fried duck egg, mustard maple syrup). Add a side of “Roasted Beets and you’ll be waffling on about your brunch for weeks.

If all else fails and you don’t even make it out of bed some of the best brunch dishes are the ones you rustle up at home from scratch. Root through your kitchen, get your friends around and enjoy each other’s company.

You can’t get any more healthy than that.  By Elle Linton
