Cristiano Ronaldo has made us laugh, smile and cry (depending on who you support) but 90% of the time he has made us all purr at his brilliance. However, underneath the masquerade of his nobility there has always been a suspicion that he has a darker or somewhat selfish side to him, which has certainly been revealed at times this season.
Ronaldo has been seen throwing his arms in the air when teammates have popped up with goals ahead of him. He frequently ignores good opportunities to pass and often finds himself celebrating goals by himself, such as in the 2014 Champions League Final 2014. Much of that has been ignored because of his 279 goals in 258 games for Real Madrid, not to mention his three Premier League, three Champions League and one La Liga winner’s medals. Let’s not forget that Ronaldo has four Ballon D’Or trophies, his own lucrative brand and a range of Nike attire built around his career. The debate over Ronald vs Lionel Messi will always split a room with the former winning votes for his time in the Premier League. Ronaldo’s lifestyle off the pitch brings him a different kind of admiration from fans but also attracts negative press.
Despite his accolades, Cristiano’s individual qualities have always stood out more than his teamwork, and that has always been a problem for the Real Madrid forward. This season has seen a decline in his statistical performance as the Portugal captain has the worst “shots to goals” ratio in La Liga and the worst “shots to shots on target” ratio. Six of Ronaldo’s 19 goals this season have been penalties leaving him six goals behind top scorer and archrival Messi who himself has been criticised for his lacklustre performances at certain times this season. The biggest problem for Ronaldo right now is his lack of the acceleration that he has often relied upon. He manages to get past one player but then waits too long to deliver a pass as that isn’t something ingrained in his style of play. Real Madrid is yet to lose under Zidane when CR7 has been injured; the team seems to gel and play faster and more free-flowing football (20 games, 17 wins).
Time seems to be running out for the Portugal man with Gareth Bale approaching the age of 28 and looking ready to take the Galaticos on his shoulders. Madrid are also on the hunt for Chelsea winger Eden Hazard, further highlighting the fact they may believe Ronaldo is past his best. It has been well documented that Cristiano has recently bought a number of properties in the US, so could an MLS move be around the corner?
After more than a decade at the top of the beautiful game, the time has come for Ronaldo to step down before he is pulled down.
