Stay in a Glass Igloo in Finland

One of the most famous natural treasures on display in Finland are the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, visible around 200 clear nights a year, from August to April. For the best view the sky needs to be clear and the lights are clearer the more north you travel.

iglooThe Igloo Hotels allow you to feel like you are sleeping in the open but with all the comforts of a hotel. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is an exotic tourist spot that houses visitors in amazing shelters within a vast stretch of Lapland ice. The Igloo village is in Rovaniemi, the tranquil land of enormous and quiet pine trees beside the Lehtojarvi Lake, far from the hustle-bustle of cities.

These are absolutely ideal conditions for sky watching and seeing the Northern Lights, as the surroundings are free of pollution and ground light. There is an  Aurora Alarm to wake you up so you can watch the sky from the warmth of your bed!

You can also sign up on the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website for the Aurora Alerts; free email alerts that are sent whenever the sky shows magnetic conditions that make an aurora appearance likely! Amazing, right? There is never a guarantee that you will see the Aurora Borealis but sleeping in the glass-roofed igloo certainly increases the chance.

Two sizes of igloos are available, 20 sq meters for two people and 33 sq meters for four people. You can get an extra bed if needed and there is a toilet inside each igloo. The igloos will keep you warm even in the chilliest nights, as the rooms are insulated and have under-floor heating to make them as comfortable as a normal hotel room.

The glass roof is kept snow-free to avoid blocking the sky-watching; it is made of electrically heated glass which melts snow. You can adjust the position of the beds according to your choice, as they are motorised and easily moved.

Breakfast is complimentary in the Kakslauttanen Arctic Snow Hotel and Glass Igloos. You can enjoy it within the coziness of your igloo or join the grand breakfast session in the central building of Lumikartano.

On Utsuvevaara fell, there are 12 luxurious glass-ceiling igloos close to the Levi ski resort in Kittila. The view of the Levi village is ethereal.

There is also the super-luxurious Northern Lights House, an exotic villa with two bedroom suites, a fireplace, sauna and beautiful terrace with a hot tub.
